2008 Lexus GS450H Review

An excellent hybrid sedan with a ton of luxurious features, good handling, and enough power to satisfy anyone's need for speed.

Reviewed by Automotive on

The 2008 Lexus GS450h offers a smooth, quiet ride that protects drivers and their passengers from traffic. But it also gives a 3.5-liter V-6 hybrid engine with 340 horsepower that will zip through traffic effortlessly. Lexus has become synonymous with classic style and luxury. This hybrid vehicle doesn't skimp on those attributes. It has a leather interior with a highly-polished wood trim that is a true work of expert craftsmanship. It also has a ton of features that will make consumers safe and comfortable on their drives to work or cross-country excursions.

The Range

Body Styles: Sedan
Engines: 3.5-liter V-6 hybrid engine
Transmissions: CVT, continuously variable transmission

What's New

The Lexus GS450h received some minor interior and exterior updates in 2008. This year also offers an exclusive Black Opal Mica paint color.

Just because you want a high-performance sedan doesn't mean that you have to sacrifice style. The 2008 Lexus GS450h maintains its classiness without becoming pretentious or annoying. If consumers want to add a little flavor, consider the optional rear spoiler, which gives the sedan a much sportier look.

Full of leather, wood, and aluminum, the 2008 Lexus GS450h is a beauty to behold. Each component fits together seamlessly, making it one of the most attractive interiors on the market. Unfortunately, the highly-polished wood trim can reflect light.

The 2008 Lexus GS450h comes with plenty of luxury features. Leather upholstery, Bluetooth compatibility, a 10-speaker audio system, and heated and cooled front seats all come standard. Of course, fancy options like the 14-speaker Mark Levinson audio system can be added.

This sedan has enough space for five adult passengers, but it fits four much more comfortably. It also has a pretty small trunk that only offers 7.5 cubic feet of space. The trunk space in similar vehicles is taken up by the GS450h's battery.

Performance & Handling

The 2008 Lexus GS450h pairs a 3.5-liter V-6 with a high-output electric motor to offer up to 340 horsepower. While some hybrids leave drivers feeling disappointed, this beauty can go from zero to 60 mph in just 5.2 seconds.

The 2008 GS450h also has excellent handling that will let drivers switch lanes without hesitation. It also comes with an adaptive suspension system that adds to their ride's enjoyment. By setting the suspension to Comfort mode, they get an extremely smooth ride that protects them from imperfections in the road. Switch it to Sport mode, and the suspension stiffens so drivers can feel the road in their hands. They can even add the optional active stabilizer system to prevent body roll on the tightest corners.

The 2008 Lexus GS450h comes with a total of 10 airbags, including full-length head curtain airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, and front and rear seat-mounted side airbags. With all of this protection, it's no surprise that the GS450h received a ""good"" rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for frontal-offset and side-impact safety tests.

Drivers don't have to have a collision to find out how safe the 2008 Lexus GS450h is. It also comes standard with anti-lock brakes with brake assist, stability control, and traction control that will help avoid accidents. They can also add extra safety features, such as the Pre-Collision System, which uses radar to sense obstacles and collisions. This allows the car to make adjustments that will help avoid collisions whether pulling out of the driveway or coasting down the interstate.
