Lexus GX470

The Lexus GX470 was a well-equipped midsize luxury SUV based on the mechanics of the popular Toyota 4Runner. Produced between 2003 and 2009, the GX470 earned a reputation as a capable off-road vehicle with convenient amenities. However, a burgeoning market for crossover SUVs with better fuel economy prompted Lexus to replace the body-on-frame GX470 with the more versatile Lexus GX460 in 2010.

More on the Lexus GX470
Lexus GX470 Origins

Early GX470 models came in a single trim equipped with a 4.7-liter V-8 engine producing 235 horsepower. The engine would later be improved to 263 horsepower. An all-wheel drive system with low-ranging gear and a five-speed automatic transmission were always standard.

Standard off-road equipment on the first GX470 included hi-lo gear selection, a transmission hill holder, a double wishbone front suspension, and a solid live axle rear suspension. Additional technologies added over the years included downhill and uphill assist control, rear adjustable height control, and an optional dynamic suspension system able to adjust the vehicle’s stabilizer bars depending on terrain.

Inside, the GX470 featured well-heeled appointments that were typical of the Lexus brand. Leather and wood trim, a power sunroof, and a heated driver seat were standard on every model. Lighted running boards, a chrome grille, and alloy wheels added a luxurious look to the exterior.

A Sport edition joined the GX470 lineup in 2005, adding unique accessories, dark graphite alloy wheels, a black maple-trimmed interior, and a dynamic suspension system.

The Lexus GX470 was best known as a plush family-friendly SUV that was able to perform capably on and off the pavement.

With an optional reclining third row seat, the GX470 could provide room for up to eight people. The cargo area offered 49.7 cubic feet of storage with seats in place and up to 77.5 cubic feet with seats folded.

Standard towing capacity was 5,000 pounds, though an optional towing package could increase the maximum load to 6,500 pounds. Features such as an 8.3-inch ground clearance, a self-leveling rear air suspension, shock absorber controls, and optional automatically adjusting stabilizer bars assisted in off-road performance.

Lexus GX470 Features

Lexus produced its last GX470 for 2009.

The 2009 GX470 was available in just one trim level. A 4.7-liter V-8 engine, five-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive system were standard.

Standard exterior features in 2009 included 17-inch alloy wheels, all-terrain tires, a power sunroof with remote operation, a roof rack, rain-sensing windshield wipers, fog lights, lighted running boards, and a rear side-hinged door. Inside the car, amenities included leather upholstery, wood trim on the dash and center console, leather and wood door trim, a tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel, steering wheel audio and cruise controls, power heated mirrors, a multi-level heated driver seat, power adjustable front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, an 11-speaker audio system with in-dash six-CD changer, and a split-folding rear seatback.

Buyers could upgrade to Bluetooth technology, satellite radio accessibility, an optional third row seat, a rear-seat DVD entertainment system, and a navigation system paired with a premium 14-speaker Mark Levinson surround sound audio system.

A Sport Package featured an adjustable suspension system exclusive to the GX470, though the system could also be added individually. Other features of the Sport option included black and graphite trim features, chrome accents, and distinctive wheels.

The GX470 provided an average amount of space for a traditional SUV, with front passengers receiving 40.2 inches of head room and 41.8 inches of leg room and rear seat passengers receiving 40 inches of head room and 36.8 inches of leg room. A rear cargo area offered 49.7 cubic feet of storage.

Six exterior finishes and two interior color schemes were offered for 2009.

Lexus GX470 Evolution

In 2004, the GX470 received several safety upgrades, including a tire pressure monitoring system, roll sensors, and an optional rear backup camera. A dynamic suspension system became optional.

In 2005, Lexus added a Sport edition. The GX470 Sport came standard with the line’s optional dynamic suspension system. Unique features included dark graphite alloy wheels, black emblems, smoked bezel headlights, fog light trim, a chrome-tipped exhaust system, chrome license plate frame, and black bird’s eye maple and graphite interior trim.

The base GX470 also introduced some new features for 2005, including Bluetooth compatibility, a more advanced navigation system, and a voice control feature for audio, climate control, and navigation systems.

The addition of more entertainment choices came in 2007. DVDs could now be played on the optional Mark Levinson Premium Audio System, while the screen size of an optional rear-seat entertainment system was expanded to nine inches. The navigation system option was upgraded with iPod connectivity and an improved display.
