2012 Lexus HS250h Review

Lexus luxury, Corolla style

Reviewed by Automotive on

The Lexus HS 250h has the distinction of being the first hybrid-only vehicle offered by Lexus. Its overall size puts the sedan in a middle ground between the IS and the ES.

The engine is the first four-cylinder Lexus has ever offered--Toyota's 2.4-liter Atkinson cycle inline-4. When combined with the two electric motors, the Hybrid Synergy Drive system puts out 187 horsepower. The transmission is an electronically controlled continuously variable unit. For you tech geeks out there, it's essentially the same as the Camry Hybrid's powertrain.

The 2012 HS 250h sedan also gets the upscale Lexus two-tone interior, along with numerous upscale luxury touches befitting the Lexus brand, such as the optional navigation system comes with the Lexus Remote Touch controller, and an optional heads-up display.

The Range

Body style: Sedan
Engine: 2.4-liter 4-cylinder
Transmission: Continuously variable transmission (CVT)
Model: HS 250h

What's New

The HS 250h was all-new for 2010, so no mechanical or interior changes were announced for the 2012 model year. The only news is with exterior color changes: Nebula Gray Pearl replaces Smoky Granite Mica for 2012.

While the HS is supposed to be a luxurious small sedan, the reality is that it bears more than a passing resemblance to the Toyota Corolla, even though the two vehicles aren't related. Still, this is a Lexus sedan with plenty of Lexus styling cues. The HS rolls on standard 17-inch wheels with 18-inchers available as an option.

Plenty of tech features here: iPod connectivity and Bluetooth, optional navigation system comes with the computer-mouse-like Remote Touch controller, an optional heads-up display, voice command, and lots of gauges to monitor the hybrid system.

Performance & Handling

The HS 250h gets to 60 mph in 8.4 seconds, according to Lexus. Even though the HS is 500 pounds heavier than the Prius, it's also more powerful and sacrifices some fuel economy for performance, which explains why the HS is two seconds faster to 60. The HS is quiet on the freeway, although this is no sport sedan.

Dual front airbags, front and rear side airbags, dual front knee airbags, and front and rear side curtain airbags are standard. Also standard are disc brakes with four-sensor ABS with brake assist, a pre-collision warning system, and vehicle stability control.
