Lexus IS-F

The Lexus IS-F is a compact luxury sport sedan that made its market debut in 2008. The first truly high-performance vehicle to be offered by Lexus, the IS-F comes equipped with a V-8 engine, track-tuned suspension, and unique interior and exterior styling details. Currently, the IS-F, which is based on the regular Lexus IS sedan, is still in its first generation. However, in 2011 it underwent a number of changes that included the addition of wider wheels and an updated interior color scheme.

About the Lexus IS-F

Lexus may be a well-respected luxury brand, but over the years it has not exactly been associated with high-performance vehicles. The IS-F may soon change that. Since its introduction in 2008, the Lexus IS-F has established itself as one of the first truly high-performance models to be produced by the Japanese luxury automaker. While many models produced by Lexus are known to be on the dull side in terms of drivability, the IS-F is a true performer designed to deliver excitement along with the luxury and style one has come to associate with the Lexus marque.

Lexus IS-F Features

The 2012 Lexus IS-F comes in a single trim level that includes a generous array of standard features. These include 19-inch alloy wheels, Brembo brakes, limited slip rear differential, sport-tuned suspension, bi-xenon headlamps, LED daytime running lights, a sunroof, a keyless ignition, keyless entry, auto dimming mirrors, power heated leather front sport seats with memory settings, suede seat inserts, dual-zone climate control, Bluetooth with audio streaming, and an audio system equipped with 13 speakers, a six-CD changer, satellite radio, iPod interface, and an auxiliary audio jack. There is also the available option of a two-tone color scheme available in red or white with black.

Additional options include a hard-drive based navigation system, a back-up camera, real-time traffic and weather updates, front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, and a Mark Levinson surround sound system with 14 speakers.

The 2012 Lexus IS-F is a rear-wheel drive sport sedan powered by a 5.0-liter V-8 engine that produces 416 horsepower and 371 lb-ft of torque. The model contains an eight-speed automatic transmission equipped with manual mode and paddle shifters that are mounted on the steering wheel. Reviews indicate the 2012 IS-F accelerates from zero to 60 mph in just 4.8 seconds. EPA estimated gas mileage is a respectable 16/23 mpg city/highway and 18 mpg combined.

The IS-F earns reasonable marks for safety, having received a top rating of ""Good"" from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in frontal and side impact tests, as well an ""Acceptable"" rating in roof strength tests. Standard safety features on the model include anti-lock brakes, traction control, stability control, front-seat side airbags, front knee airbags, and full-length side curtain airbags.

Stylish on the inside and out, the 2012 Lexus IS-F features a quiet cabin and well laid out controls. The interior of the vehicle is constructed from high-quality materials. One of the main drawbacks to the IS-F, however, is a lack of cabin space. Headroom and legroom are limited in both the front and back seat. The IS-F’s trunk holds up to 13 cubic feet of cargo, which is on par with most cars in the vehicle’s class.

Reviews indicate that the IS-F is an exciting car to drive. The car’s V-8 responds well and can roar to life with the slightest provocation. The car’s chassis and sport-tuned suspension allow it to deal with the abundance of power generated by the beefy V-8 engine. The car also provides excellent handling and grips well on the corners. While many sports car enthusiasts will be disappointed by the lack of an option for a manual transmission, the eight-speed automatic is extremely capable, upshifting and downshifting quickly and responsively.

Lexus IS-F Evolution

Introduced in 2008, the Lexus IS-F remains in its first generation. Past models of the compact sport sedan resemble the current models. However, there have been a number of changes implemented over the years. In 2009, Lexus made minor revisions to the instrument and interior trim. The following year, the car’s electronics were updated to include hard-drive navigation, improved Bluetooth, and an iPod interface.

Models produced between 2008 and 2010 are known for their stiff suspensions, which lead to inferior ride quality. However, in 2011, several changes were made to rectify this situation. That year saw the addition of revised suspension tuning, more responsive power steering, and a Torsen limited slip-differential that provides additional traction. Other cosmetic changes from that year include the addition of LED daytime running lights, new gauges, improved interior trim, and the option of an orange and black interior color scheme.
