2006 Lexus IS250 Review
A great entry-level luxury sedan.
Reviewed by Automotive on
The IS250 is a sedan introduced by Lexus as a direct market response to the BMW 3 Series. The IS250 has seen mixed results. Although the price made the Lexus IS300 a desirable vehicle for younger adults, it failed to measure up to BMW’s mechanics.
The 2006 Lexus IS250 is meant to make up for some of the flaws of the IS300. The 2006 Lexus IS250 is bigger in size and offers a lot more in standard features. Rear- and all-wheel drive vehicles are available with different power train options. A 2.5-liter, V-6 engine replaces the inline six-cylinder of the IS300. Variable-valve timing makes the IS250 a bit more efficient with fuel than the old inline. Several electronically-controlled components make the 2006 Lexus IS250 a more pleasant drive than its predecessor.
The 2006 Lexus IS250 is a comfortable ride, although it does tail the BMW 3 Series in terms of handling and sportiness.
Engines: 2.5-liter V-6
Transmissions: Six-speed manual transmission, six-speed automatic
The 2006 Lexus IS250 is a new model, which replaces the old IS300. New powertrains and a different cabin space are included in this model.
The 2006 Lexus IS250 has a lovely sloping roof that improves aerodynamics but does cut down on some of the head room in the rear. Standard features include 17-inch alloy wheels fitted with all-season tires, variable intermittent wipers, a power glass sunroof, daytime running lights, and power mirrors that are also heated.
The 2006 Lexus IS250’s interior is very luxurious. There isn’t any hard plastic to be found anywhere. All surfaces are soft to the touch, even the door panels and dash. The seats are also covered in fine leather.
Seating is very comfortable in the front. The short wheelbase makes for some discomfort in the back seat. Legroom is a bit cramped due to the shortened deck of the vehicle. Large adults might not want to sit in the back seat at all.
Standard interior features include 10-way adjustable front driver and passenger seats, lumbar support, front door pockets, electric speed-proportional power steering, a tilt and telescoping steering wheel, internal air filtration, dual-zone climate controls, alloy trim, a leather steering wheel, front and rear floor mats, and an electrochromatic inside rearview mirror.
Performance & Handling
The 2006 Lexus IS250 is powered by a 2.5-liter, V-6 engine that produces 204 horsepower at 6400 rpm with 185 lb-ft of torque at 4800 rpm. The engine is wed to a six-speed manual transmission. An optional six-speed automatic transmission is also available. The 2006 Lexus IS250 is standard rear-drive, with all-wheel-drive versions available. The all-wheel drive version is only available with the six-speed automatic transmission.
The 2006 Lexus IS250 is a smooth ride, as a luxury sedan should be. Acceleration feels nice and strong, although not as sporty as one might hope. The manual transmission gets you a bit more control and speed, but it is better to go with the automatic transmission, which is a bit smoother to use. The interior of the vehicle is very quiet while driving. Handling also very confident, even on winding roads.
The 2006 Lexus IS250 is full of safety features. Standard equipment includes front and rear side-curtain airbags, front seat-mounted airbags, traction control, four-wheel anti-lock brakes with Electronic Brake Distribution and BrakeAssist, and stability control. A Pre-Collision system packaged with the Dynamic Radar Cruise Control is an optional feature. The Dynamic Radar Cruise Control system adjusts to the speed according to any obstacles in front of the vehicle. The car will slow if any vehicles or objects are present. The Pre-Collision system stiffens the suspension of the 2006 Lexus IS250, engages the BrakeAssist system, and tightens the seatbelts to prevent injury to the passengers during a collision.
The 2006 Lexus IS250 received a top rating of ""good"" by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in frontal offset and side impact collisions. Meanwhile, it received an ""acceptable"" score for rear impact collisions by the same board.
