The 2013 Lexus IS250 is sportier in design and interior features than under the hood or on the road, which makes it a bit of a disappointment considering the emphasis on looking sporty. While it makes up for this in fuel economy, the Lexus IS250 is better left for another Lexus or another sports car. Despite this, the high safety ratings and attractive looks are enough for some drivers.
New For 2013
Lexus gives very little attention to the IS250 for 2013. Updates are minor and include:
- Dropping the manual transmission
- HD radio with iTunes tagging built in for the navigation system
- No smartphone app suite
The 2013 Lexus IS250 is a compact luxury sedan with an extremely sporty look. It comes standard with 17-inch wheels, fog lights, and a sunroof. It has a long wheelbase and a wide stance to give it a muscle car look, which doesn’t reflect its actual nature.
The Lexus IS250 has many notable exterior features including glass that contains ultraviolet and infrared protection for the driver and passengers, anti-chip lower body panels, side mirrors with integrated turn signals, and LED brake and taillights. There is a convertible model available, the IS250C, which features a retractable hardtop.
The F Sport package adds 18-inch wheels, front and rear spoilers, and grille inserts to the exterior design. Xenon HID headlamps are available, as are rain-sensing windshield wipers. A backup camera can be added with front and rear parking sensors to increase visibility and simplify the parking experience. Overall, the IS250 is an extremely attractive compact luxury car.
Interior & Cargo
The 2013 Lexus IS250 is a bit of a tight squeeze, especially the convertible model. The standard models can seat five small adults, and the convertible is set up with four seats. Upholstery is all leather, and trim includes wood and metallic accents throughout. Rear legroom is extremely lacking, as is the 13 cubic feet of cargo space.
Entertainment features include an impressive 13-speaker sound system that comes standard with an iPod auxiliary input and a 90-day subscription to SirusXM satellite radio. This includes MP3 and WMA compatibility and comes with an AM/FM/CD radio. DVD playback is an available option, but it is extremely costly.
The Lexus Personalized Settings (LPS) is a nice feature to have if there are multiple people driving the same car, as it allows multiple drivers to save settings throughout the car. There is an optional navigation system that lets the driver know about traffic and weather as it happens and even informs the driver of upcoming gas stations and prices at these stations.
Other standard interior features include air-conditioning, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and power windows, locks, and mirrors.
As usual, Lexus makes safety a priority. The 2013 Lexus IS250 includes a year subscription to its safety service, which automatically notifies the authorities and sends help in the event of an accident. After the first year, the car owner has the option to extend the service at his own cost.
Standard safety features include an anti-lock braking system with braking assist technology. Also standard are front and rear head airbags, side curtain airbags, and a passenger-detection sensor that stops the passenger airbag from deploying when the seat is empty. Other safety features include a post-collision safety system which works with other systems in the car to reduce the likeliness of injury and further collisions. Stability control and traction control help keep the Lexus IS250 on the road, and the headrest's whiplash protection system reduces the chance of whiplash.
Optionally, the Lexus IS250 can be equipped with a parking assist system that actually makes parking less of a hassle, which is especially true for parallel parking.
The 2013 Lexus IS250 also received a perfect ""Good"" rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in both side-impact and frontal collisions, the two most common and dangerous collisions. Overall, Lexus provides its usual amount of safety.
The 2013 Lexus IS250 comes equipped with a 2.5-liter, V-6 engine that produces 204 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque. It can be equipped with rear or all-wheel drive with a six-speed shiftable automatic transmission. Unfortunately, while the V-6 engine is somewhat powerful, this sporty-looking compact luxury sedan actually isn't that impressive on the road. Because of fuel-saving technology, the V-6 engine can sometimes be a bit sluggish.
Fuel economy is decent for the engine size, and it is estimated at 21/30 mpg city/highway. The all-wheel-drive option takes only about two miles per gallon from these numbers. The car goes from zero to 60 mph in about 7.9 seconds, which is well-below average for the IS250's class.
