2009 Lexus LS460 Review

Luxurious driving experience in a classic sedan.

Reviewed by Automotive on

The 2009 version of the flagship Lexus sedan puts an emphasis on comfort and ease of driving, providing a luxurious driving experience that’s second to none in its price range. The 2009 Lexus LS460 sticks with its award-winning redesign from two years ago, while introducing a wealth of updated technology. Dual-zone automatic climate control, heated seats with power controls and memory, and a 10-speaker sound system with an MP3 player and audio jack are now standard features.

2009 brings the introduction of the all-wheel drive model to the standard LS460 sedan and the longer-wheelbase LS460 L, bringing greater control to an already exceptional driving experience. The LS460 L standard trim package is very impressive, including a rear view camera, drive-based navigation system, and Bluetooth connectivity as standard features. Lexus never scrimped with the LS460’s base offerings: 18-inch alloy wheels, sunroof, leather seats, dual zone automatic climate control, keyless ignition and entry, a six-CD, 10-speaker audio system with MP3 hookup, and an auxiliary audio jack.

All three models of the LS460 compare favorably with German competitors like the BMW 7 series and the Mercedes S class. Although some drivers might find it a tad underpowered, the LS460 offers a comfortable ride with lots of luxury features and gadgets thrown in. With its relatively low-price point, the 2009 Lexus LS460 is a great option for budget shoppers who demand high-value luxury and comfort. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a more comfortable way to spend your daily commute than the LS460.

The Range

Body styles: luxury sedan
Engine: 4.6 Liter V-8
Transmission: eight-speed automatic transmission
Models: LS460, LS460 L

What's New

The biggest news for the 2009 Lexus LS460 is the introduction of an all-wheel drive model to the sedan’s lineup. The AWD is available on the base LS460, as well as the LS460 L’s long-wheel base body. Lexus’s air suspension package and gear ratio steering are included with the AWD model, while passenger seat memory is now standard in the LS460 L.

The 2009 Lexus LS460 has a sleek, stylish body that compares favorably with the BMW 7 series. While undoubtedly attractive, the LS460 is not likely to stand out in a crowd. Its smooth but conservative profile is a good fit for this sedan’s role as an ultra-luxurious and professional daily commuting car.

The biggest selling point for the 2009 S460 and LS460 L is the interior. Both the standard model and the LS460 L offer generous leg space and headroom, while the standard model offers 18 cubic feet of trunk space. The interior is dressed in rich leather and warm wood trim, formed with craftsman’s precision around a wealth of impressive features and accessories. None of the details were overlooked in this car’s interior design. From the dashboard to the cup holders, every inch of the 2009 Lexus LS460 carries the thoughtfulness of an artist’s touch. This luxury sedan offers heated, power seats with memory, dual zone air-conditioning, a cooler box, and built-in rear seat sensors that adjust the climate control. Electroluminescent gauges make the control panel bright and easy to read, with a direct layout that’s simple to navigate even when driving.

Performance & Handling

The Lexus LS460’s powerful V-8 deals out 380 horsepower, with enough torque to go from zero to 60 mph in less than six seconds. This sedan lacks the level of athletic control and refined handling of a sports car, and doesn’t take corners as smoothly as some of its competitors. However, the LS460 offers more than enough muscle and finesse for drivers looking for top-level everyday driving. The LS450’s power train is nearly silent, and offers a wonderfully smooth ride; when it comes to a quiet, isolated, and comfortable driving experience, the Lexus LS450 is virtually unbeatable. The standard eight-speed transmission with manual shift also performs smoothly and flawlessly.

Standard safety features for all trim levels include anti-lock disc brakes, traction control, stability control, front side airbags, front seat airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, and front seat knee airbags. Optional safety features include a pre-collision system, adaptive cruise control, and rear-seat airbags.

The LS460 also comes standard with Safety Connect, Lexus’s emergency telematics system that will automatically notify emergency services in the event of a severe rear-end collision or airbag deployment.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the 2009 LS460 the highest rating of ""good"" for its level of protection in both rear and front impacts.
