Throughout its more than decade-long history, the Lexus LX-Class SUV's have been tightly linked to the Toyota Land Cruiser with which they share their mechanical underpinnings. This is quite a good thing, in that the LX lineup has always enjoyed the model updates and technological advances made for the Land Cruiser, while at the same time exhibiting an outstanding level of luxury synonymous with Lexus.
To this end, the 2007 update of the Land Cruiser was followed by the 2008 update for the LX and is carried over unchanged into 2009.
The current LX 570 is four inches longer and one inch wider than its predecessor, while maintaining the same wheelbase. While one can see obvious design elements of the LX 470, such as the full-length running boards, D-pillar with notched window, and bulging fender flares, the headlights and grille have dropped the squared-off look in favor of a more angled appearance, similar to that of the Lexus LS flagship sedan.
The LX 570 is powered by the largest engine ever developed by Toyota. The 5.7-liter V8 generates 383 horsepower and 403 pound feet of torque. Power is sent through a 6-speed automatic transmission to an advanced and capable 4-wheel drive system with low range.
Other features for the off-road-savvy include 4-wheel adaptive variable suspension with active height control, and crawl control with downhill assist. This second system maintains speed and braking in off-road environments so that the driver can focus on the path ahead.
Fuel economy for the LX570 ranges from 12 miles per gallon city, up to 18 miles per gallon highway.
Features like the 2-part power rear gate offer versatility and ease in loading objects, while the power-folding rear seats boost the seating capacity to 8-passengers. Luxury amenities such as leather seating, second row climate controls and backup camera are standard. Options such as rear seat DVD entertainment system and heated and cooled front seats further heighten the level of luxury that the LX brings to the table.
Standard safety features include 4-wheel antilock brakes, vehicle stability control, active traction control, and an array of front and side impact airbags for front and second row occupants.
Base MSRP for the 2009 Lexus LX 570 is $75,705. With full options, that price will break $90,000. The LX is backed by a 6-year, 70,000-mile power train warranty.
While other luxury carmakers are putting out softer, road-oriented SUVs, the blend of abundant off-road equipment, powerful V8, and a well appointed interior keeps the 2009 Lexus LX 570 true to the automaker's tough but luxurious off-road tradition.
