2009 Lexus LX570 Review

A sturdy, luxurious contender on all terrains.

Reviewed by Automotive on

The 2009 Lexus LX 570 is unique among SUVs in its ability to match on-road luxury with real off-road driving capability. While most SUVs tend to excel in either one arena or the other, the LX 570 has as much to offer on city streets as it does in the unpaved wilderness. The Lexus LX 570 is well placed to handle the competition of the luxury SUV market. It’s closely related to the Toyota Land Cruiser, and also compares well to both the Range Rover and the Mercedes GL class. The LX 570 has a lower price tag than the Range Rover, along with a better reputation for reliability. It also has a better off-road capability than the GL class. While its EPA-rated fuel economy is listed at a low, 12/18 mpg city/highway, this is still relatively efficient for an SUV that weighs a full three tons.

With its great blend of high-class luxury features and heavy-duty hauling capabilities, the Lexus LX 570 is one SUV that’s just as much at home in the suburbs as it is in the hills.

What's New

The Lexus LX 570 received a full redesign last year, and 2009 brings no major changes to this luxury SUV. The most notable updates include tinted rear side windows, and the addition of the optional Luxury Package.

The one standard change to the 2009 Lexus LX 570 is the inclusion of tinted rear side windows. More notably, 2009 brings the introduction of the new Luxury Package, which offers a number of stylish and practical improvements to the standard LX 570. The Luxury Package features upgraded wood and leather trim for the interior, along with a dark finish for the wheels. Keyless ignition/entry and a chilled center console bin are also included in the Luxury Package. Additional options include climate-controlled seats, adaptive cruise control, park assist with front and side parking-view mirrors, a rear-seat entertainment center, a 19-speaker surround-sound Mark Levinson sound system, and 30GB of built-in music storage.

The 2009 Lexus LX 570 bears a close resemblance to the Toyota Land Cruiser. This is a standard four-door SUV with hatchback, with a smooth but unremarkable silhouette. The LX 570 is built to tackle a variety of terrains, driving conditions, and its exterior reflects its purpose. Twenty-inch alloy wheels are standard, along with xenon headlights, a power glass sunroof, and roof rack. A trailer hitch and wiring are also included.

The 2009 LX 570 may have a no-frills exterior, but Lexus hasn’t sacrificed any interior comforts in the name of practicality. Rich wood trim and leather seating give the LX 570 a luxurious feel, along with power-adjustable heated front seats with driver memory, four-zone automatic climate control, a nine-speaker sound system, and Bluetooth connectivity. The LX 570 can accommodate up to eight people, though not comfortably; despite its broad appeal, this isn’t a great option for a family car.

Performance & Handling

The Lexus LX 570 boasts a 5.7-liter V-8 engine that produces a strong 393 horsepower and 403 lb-ft of torque, which should provide enough power to climb most hills and handle a range of difficult terrains. The electronically controlled suspension offers adaptive ride height and damping control for greater stability. With a towing capacity of up to 8500 pounds, the LX 570 is capable of pulling most boats, not to mention camping trailers, bikes, or any kind of recreational cargo. While the LX 570 has plenty of hauling muscle, speed is not its forte; it goes from zero to 60 mph in just over seven seconds. Considering the primary purpose of this SUV and the requirements of its buyers, however, this should not be a major drawback.

Like its close relative, the Toyota Land Cruiser, the Lexus LX 570 features Hill-Start Assist Control and off-road Crawl Control, allowing it to take on rough terrain with little difficulty. Despite its heavy curb weight, the LX 570 handles impressively both on- and off-road. This SUV’s overall performance may not be as impressive as some of its competitors, but it still has plenty of good to offer, with enough strong points to make it worth considering.

The 2009 Lexus LX 570’s standard safety features include anti-lock brakes, stability control, traction control, front seat airbags, front-seat knee airbags, second row airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, and active front headrests. The optional Lexus Pre-Collision System uses radar to detect impending collisions, automatically deploying brakes and tightening seatbelts. Adaptive cruise control is another optional safety feature.
