Lexus LX570 Origins
In 1996, Lexus decided to join the soon to explode luxury sport utility vehicle (SUV) market by upgrading the Land Cruiser built by its parent company, Toyota. As is typical with Lexus vehicles, the numerical designation has changed over time with major redesigns that mark the different generations of a given model. The LX series began with the LX 450. In 1998, the LX 470 was introduced. That model continued through 2006. After another major redesign, the LX570 debuted, representing the third generation of the LX series. The LX570 continues to be made into the 2013 model year although there was 2012 no model year LX SUV.
The first generation of the LX SUVs is very similar to the Land Cruiser with only minor cosmetic exterior alterations. These models use an inline-six engine and a four-speed automatic transmission. Costing $7,000 more than the Land Cruiser, the LX 450 offers an upgraded interior, more standard features and options, and a softer, more sedan-like ride. Initial quality ratings are the highest in its class, and few problems ever occur with these models.
The second generation is designated the LX 470, and during the nine-year production run, this upgraded Land Cruiser continued to be popular and well made. It contains a new V-8 engine that had its horsepower bumped up a few times during this generation’s run. Many consider the 570 to be without peer because it does have rough and ready capabilities, yet it manages to remain well-mannered in its handling while providing a ride that rivals any of the luxury sedans in the Lexus line.

Lexus did not produce a 2012 model of the LX570. The prior year’s model that continues to be available in 2012 uses a 383 horsepower, 5.7-liter V-8 connected to a six-speed automatic transmission. Full-time four-wheel drive speaks to the SUV’s nature, as well as its truck platform design. It offers a great off-road feature called Crawl Control mode. Turning this on engages the anti-lock brakes and electronic throttle to make fully controlled ascents and descents, leaving the driver responsible for just the steering.
