1997 Lexus SC400 Review

Luxury and performance comes at a price.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 1997 Lexus SC400 was paraded as a slimmer, sleeker option for luxury when it was introduced to the sports luxury coupe market. It's slightly less reserved in styling than other Lexus models. It provides the reliability, power, and luxury expected from a top automaker. Unfortunately, the price point is slightly higher than much of their competition.

The Range

Body Styles: coupe
Engines: 4.0-liter V-8
Transmissions: four-speed automatic
Models: Lexus SC400

What's New

The 1997 Lexus SC400 doesn't see any major revisions, but gets a revamp on the exterior and interior designs to remain contemporary. New options are available as well.

Exterior

The 1997 Lexus SC400 stands out in its class. Featuring an extremely sporty and sleek design, the Lexus SC400 does not look like a lot of bulky sport/luxury coupes. It also comes standard with powered heated mirrors and front and rear windshield defrosters. The exterior mirrors feature auto-dim technology to ease the strain lights put on the eyes. The 16-inch wheels are alloy, but options for chrome wheels are available, as is the rear spoiler.

Interior

The interior of the 1997 Lexus SC400 is a tight fit for more than two. The legroom in the backseats is extremely lacking, and taller passengers may find the ceiling is too low. Other than size issues and lack of cargo space, the interior has all the luxury expected from Lexus, which includes leather seating, steering wheel trim, and shift knob. The driver's and passenger's seat are both powered, but heated seats cost extra. Other standard interior features include air-conditioning, automatic climate control, and powered windows and locks. The standard AM/FM/Cassette audio system can be replaced with a compact disc changer and Nakamichi audio system.

Performance & Handling

The 1997 Lexus SC 400 gets a powerful 260-hp V-8 engine, which attributes to a quick acceleration that pumps out 270 lb-ft of torque. The rear drive and optional traction control give drivers more control in inclement weather. The power steering and brakes systems make the ride extremely responsive and fluid.

Safety

The 1997 Lexus SC400 comes standard with four-wheel anti-lock brakes. For driver and passenger protection, dual airbags are included for the front seat only. There is an anti-theft alarm system and fog lights as well. Automatic headlights are also standard. Optional traction control can be installed to reduce slippage and sliding on the road.
