2022 Lincoln Aviator MODEL OVERVIEW

  • Awesome design inside and out
  • Impressive base engine
  • Balance of luxury and performance

  • Snug third row
  • Awkward door release button
  • Underwhelming plug-in hybrid

The Aviator is Lincoln's three-row luxury SUV, a middle child of the lineup positioned above the Corsair and Nautilus but below the top-dog Navigator. Lincoln introduced the current-generation Aviator for the 2020 model year, and we haven't seen any significant updates since; figure there may be a midcycle face-lift for 2023. Even a couple years old, the Aviator leads its segment ahead of other three-rows including the Acura MDX, Cadillac XT6, Audi Q7, and Volvo XC90.

What's New

  • Three new exterior colors (Bronze Smoke Metallic, Gilded Green Metallic, and Flight Blue Metallic)
  • Wireless charging, head-up display, and phone-as-a-key are now standard on Aviator Reserve and Grand Touring

What We Think

Lincoln seems to have successfully reinvented itself in recent years. The automaker once known for badge-engineered Fords with leather interiors has managed to deliver a lineup of vehicles that feel distinct from their non-luxury counterparts. The Aviator leads the charge in that sense, with a bold, distinctive design far removed from that of the Ford Explorer.

Extensive wood, metal, and leather throughout the interior strengthen the Aviator's identity as a proper luxury SUV. We've praised the Aviator's available 30-way adjustable seats, too. The third row is tight, as is par for the segment, but at least access is easy because of the quick-sliding second-row seats.

The Aviator's driving experience is as impressive as its cabin. Lincoln's standard 400-hp twin-turbo V-6 offers plenty of grunt and redefines our expectations for a base engine in the segment. The Aviator's RWD underpinnings also deliver relatively balanced handling, and Lincoln nailed the supple ride quality.

The Aviator is a top competitor in its segment. It holds its own against foreign luxury competitors without copying them.

Performance and Efficiency

Lincoln offers a pair of six-cylinder powertrain options under the hood of the Aviator, both mated with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Safety Ratings and Features

The Aviator is a very safe SUV. For its performance in IIHS safety testing, Lincoln's three-row is a 2021 Top Safety Pick as long as you opt for the upgraded headlights, which are optional on most trims and standard on the Aviator Black Label. The Aviator also earns a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA

Lincoln also includes a host of driver assist active safety features on every Aviator. Automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, plus front and rear parking sensors are included on all models. Adaptive cruise, lane keep assist, rear automatic braking, and park assist are optional or included depending on the trim.

Cargo Space and Interior Room

The Aviator offers more space behind the third row than its cross-town competitor, but otherwise this three-row Lincoln and its Cadillac equivalent are pretty well matched. As is typical in this segment, however, the third row feels tight in both vehicles.

Cargo space (behind first/second/third rows):

  • 2022 Lincoln Aviator: 77.7/41.8/18.3 cubic feet
  • 2022 Cadillac XT6: 78.7/43.1/12.6 cubic feet

Legroom (first/second/third rows):

  • 2022 Lincoln Aviator: 43.0/39.0/29.2 inches
  • 2022 Cadillac XT6: 41.6/39.1/29.5 inches

Every Aviator works with a 10.1-inch infotainment display and 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, regardless of engine choice or trim level. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities are standard on all models. In terms of audio, a 10-speaker system is standard, but audiophiles can enjoy 14- and 28-speaker Revel premium sound depending on the trim. New for 2022, a wireless charging pad, head-up display, and phone-as-a-key functionality are included on the Aviator Reserve and Grand Touring.

Is the Aviator Just a Fancy Ford Explorer?

Back in the early 2000s, Lincoln first used the Aviator name on an underwhelming badge-engineered and leather-lined Ford Explorer. Although the modern Aviator and Explorer ride on the same platform, the Lincoln is barely recognizable from its more affordable counterpart. Not only does its cabin feature higher-quality materials, but the Aviator also has a unique art-deco interior design, superior seats, and even symphonic alert sounds. You might find a bit of cheap Ford plastic if you search hard, but the Aviator is its own distinctly luxurious machine.

Recommended Trim

Buyers can spend anywhere from $50,000 to $90,000 on an Aviator, but skipping out on the Grand Touring model's heavy and not-that-efficient hybrid setup can save serious cash. The Aviator Reserve feels like the sweet spot of the lineup. It features handsome 20-inch wheels, an enormous panoramic sunroof, four-zone automatic climate control, a huge head-up display, and phone-as-a-key capability.
