2022 Lincoln Corsair MODEL OVERVIEW

Pros

  • Strong turbocharged engines
  • Handsome, spacious cabin
  • More than just a leather-lined Ford

Cons

  • Grabby brakes
  • Can get expensive fast
  • Rivals have larger touchscreens

As the smallest Lincoln vehicle, the Corsair slots below the Nautilus, Aviator, and Navigator in the American automaker's hierarchy of SUVs. Lincoln debuted the Ford Escape-based Corsair for the 2020 model year, and there are only minor changes for 2022. The Corsair competes with other small luxury SUVs including the Volvo XC60, Acura RDX, Audi Q5, and Tesla Model Y.

What's New

  • Three new colors: Bronze Smoke Metallic, Elite Blue Metallic, and Ocean Drive Blue Metallic
  • Luxury package on Reserve and Grand Touring adds head-up display and 13-speaker audio

What We Think

The Corsair's greatest strength is that Lincoln doesn't compromise its approach to luxury when downsizing from its larger SUVs. At times, the Corsair can even feel like a baby Navigator.

Of course, the Corsair shares plenty of hardware with its Ford Escape sibling, but Lincoln has done a particularly impressive job disguising and elevating those pedestrian underpinnings. The interior is a treat, with art-deco design cues and high-quality materials. Solid-feeling switchgear and orchestral chimes played by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra remind the driver this is no $25,000 Escape.

A plush, quiet ride helps distinguish the Corsair, too. Thanks to accurate steering, this little Lincoln feels pretty tossable around a corner, and the optional AWD setup even enables some rally-car antics. Straight-line performance is only par for the segment, though, and we found the brakes a little grabby for our tastes. For the most part, though, the Corsair delivers a relaxing drive.

Pricey options mean the Corsair can get quite expensive. Still, Lincoln's small SUV is worth consideration for its style, comfort, and distinct brand of luxury.

Performance and Efficiency

Lincoln offers three different four-cylinder options to power its smallest SUV. The base option includes standard FWD and available AWD; the more powerful turbo-four and plug-in hybrid powertrains are AWD only.

Lincoln Corsair, Corsair Reserve

  • Drivetrain: FWD or AWD
  • Engine: 2.0-liter turbo-four
  • Transmission: Eight-speed automatic
  • Horsepower/Torque: 250 hp/280 lb-ft
  • Efficiency (city/highway): 21-22/29 mpg*
  • Acceleration (0-60 mph): 7.3 seconds

Lincoln Corsair, Corsair Reserve

  • Drivetrain: AWD
  • Engine: 2.3-liter turbo-four
  • Transmission: Eight-speed automatic
  • Horsepower/Torque: 295 hp/310 lb-ft
  • Efficiency (city/highway): 21/28 mpg*
  • Acceleration (0-60 mph): 6.5 seconds

Lincoln Corsair Grand Touring

  • Drivetrain: AWD
  • Engine: 2.5-liter I-4 + electric motor
  • Transmission: CVT automatic
  • Horsepower: 266 hp
  • Efficiency (combined): 78 mpg-e (gas+elec); 33 mpg (gas); 28-mile electric range*

Safety Ratings and Features

The Corsair is among the safest SUVs on sale, but it helps to pay attention to options. From the IIHS, the Corsair earns a 2021 Top Safety Pick award, but only if you get the Acceptable-rated LED projector headlights. The standard LED reflector headlights get the lowest possible rating of Poor. For its performance in the NHTSA's crashworthiness tests, the Corsair gets a five-star overall safety rating.

Forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and automatic high-beams are all standard on the Corsair. Buyers hoping for more active safety content can opt for the Co-Pilot360 Plus package, which adds adaptive cruise control, park assist, rear brake assist, a 360-degree camera system, and front and rear parking sensors.

Cargo Space and Interior Room

Stepping inside, the Corsair offers plenty of space for passengers and cargo. Compared to the Acura RDX, the Corsair is slightly down on trunk volume but has advantages in front and rear legroom.

Cargo space (behind first/second rows):

  • 2022 Lincoln Corsair: 57.6/27.6 cubic feet
  • 2022 Acura RDX: 58.9/29.5 cubic feet

Legroom (first/second rows):

  • 2022 Lincoln Corsair: 43.2/38.6 inches
  • 2022 Acura RDX: 42.0/38.0 inches

Technology

No matter what trim you end up with, every Corsair features an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard, as is a 6.5-inch instrument cluster display behind the steering wheel. A 12.3-inch fully digital dash is available. A 10-speaker audio system is included on the base Corsair, and a 13-speaker ELS premium setup is optional on the Corsair Reserve and Grand Touring.

Electrified Luxury SUVs

The Corsair Grand Touring is not the only vehicle in its segment to offer a plug-in hybrid system. Looking at its competition, the Volvo XC60, BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, Lexus NX, and Audi Q5 all provide plug-in hybrid options. For compact luxury buyers ready to make the jump to a full EV, the obvious choice is a Tesla Model Y.

Recommended Trim

For our money, we'd buy a mid-grade Lincoln Corsair Reserve. The base engine offers plenty of acceleration for most drivers, and deciding against the 2.3-liter turbo-four and plug-in hybrid setups saves enough money to add AWD, cushy adaptive suspension, and the optional active safety tech. Plus, choosing the Reserve over the standard Corsair nets handsome 19-inch wheels, integrated navigation, and premium leather-trimmed 10-way comfort seats.
