The 2002 Lincoln LS is at an interesting point in its development. On the plus side, it’s big, offers good value, has many features standard, offers many trims/packages and different engine choices and the handling and performance are good. Maybe not BMW or Audi good but respectable. The cons are build quality, the awful automatic transmission, and the need for more cargo space. The LS is sized like a car one segment up but priced lower. It is gaining converts and while it needs some minor upgrades, buyers in this class should take a look.

The 2002 Lincoln LS has a new LSE appearance package that includes 17-inch two-tone Blade Grey wheels, a unique front fascia, round foglights, modified Blade Grey grille with color-keyed upper trim piece, side rocker panels and rear valance, low profile spoiler, dual stainless-steel exhaust tips, and LSE floor mats. An in-dash CD changer is now standard equipment for 2002 and includes Alpine Audiophile components on Sport models. The 16-inch alloy wheels on non-Sport V-6 and V-8 versions have been restyled. A Vehicle Communication System, which provides a voice-activated Motorola Timeport mobile phone, is optional and includes safety and security services, route guidance and access to weather reports, stock quotes and sports scores. There are three new colors to coincide with the deletion of three old colors.
The 2002 Lincoln LS sedan comes in five trims: base, Sport, Convenience, Premium, and LSE. The base trim includes 16-inch alloy wheels, dual exhaust, power door mirrors, heated door mirrors, intermittent wipers, front fog lights, rear window defroster, rain sensing wipers, and four-wheel independent suspension. The Sport trim adds 17-inch wheels and upgrades to the powertrain and suspension for improved performance and handling. The Convenience, Premium, and LSE trims don’t add much in the way of exterior goods. Stability control is an option for all trims as is a power moonroof.
The 2002 Lincoln LS offers a spacious and comfortable interior and almost everything that a luxury sport sedan buyer could want for cabin gear. Most everything is included in one of the five trim levels, even things like steering wheel mounted audio controls, speed sensing steering, and auto tilt-away steering wheel as well as leather and wood everywhere. Stand-alone options include a cassette player, premium audio system, remote CD player, navigation system, telecommunications system, cell phone, and heated front seats. The seats are a noticeably comfortable design and the quiet, roomy interior is mostly nice. Build quality could be improved and there is a need for extra cargo space. A rear-sensing system and an entertainment system are the only luxury super-toys not available.
Performance & Handling
The 2002 Lincoln LS’s 220 horsepower, 3.0-liter V-6 produces 215 lb-ft of torque is the base engine. The V-6-powered model can be had with a five-speed-manual transmission rather than the usual five-speed automatic making it the first stick-shift Lincoln since 1951. A 252 horsepower, 3.9-liter V-8 that makes 261 lb-ft of torque is an option but is offered only with the automatic transmission. All models are rear drive. Both engines require premium fuel. The V-8 equipped models run the zero-to-60-mph sprint in 7.3 seconds, while V-6 models will take a few extra seconds. It will handle all but the most demanding traffic situations. The automatic transmission is the Achilles heel. It responds slowly in most situations and pales in performance when compared to gearboxes in rivals from BMW and Audi. The handling is solid enough, and the sport package eliminates most body lean without negatively affecting the soft and supple ride.
For standard safety equipment the 2002 Lincoln LS includes dual front impact airbags, side-impact airbags for the front seats, all-wheel anti-lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution, remote anti-theft alarm system, child seat anchors, rear door child safety locks, dusk sensing headlamps, auto delay off headlamps, rear center three-point belt, emergency interior trunk release and all-speed traction control. An AdvanceTrac electronic stability system is optional. In NHTSA testing, it earned five out of five stars for all facets of occupant protection except side impact front safety where it received four stars. The IIHS gave its highest rating of ""good"" for frontal offset crash safety. With such an extensive list of safety gear and these outstanding scores, it should appeal to buyers that place an emphasis on safety.
