1999 Lincoln Navigator Review

Lincoln luxury in an SUV.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The Lincoln Navigator puts all the luxury of its sedans in a sports utility package strong enough to tow large boats, carry plenty of passengers, and offer a great amount of cargo space. With only two years under its belt for the Navigator by 1999, Lincoln wastes no time making sure to keep up with the competition in terms of ingenuity and power. Overall, the Lincoln Navigator provides decent safety, great luxury, and good handling. Unfortunately, all of this doesn't come cheap. Options are almost unnecessary though when considering the long list of standard features that go well beyond the basic.

The Range

Body Styles: SUV
Engines: 5.4-liter V-8
Transmissions: four-speed automatic
Models: Lincoln Navigator

What's New

Even though the Navigator was first released in 1998, the 1999 includes plenty of updates and new options. First, the engine is improved by 70 hp and 35 ft-lb more torque than the previous year's model. Stereo volume is now monitored and adjusted based on speed, and there are hands-free cellular options. The optional third-row seat is put on rollers to make customization quick and painless for the occasional need of extra passengers. All the great things about the previous year's Lincoln Navigator are still intact. This luxury sports utility vehicle comes in at a higher price, but overall, the additions make up for the price increase.

Exterior

The 1999 Lincoln Navigator sports a large chrome grille, unnecessary but stylish body cladding, and power heated exterior mirrors. The exterior comes in seven factory colors, which includes laser red tinted clear coat and medium charcoal green clear coat metallic. Other standard features include a camper package, alloy wheels, automatic headlights, and a roof rack. Exterior options include a power moonroof.

Interior

The interior of the 1999 Lincoln Navigator comes loaded with standard luxuries like a trip computer, overhead console, auto-dim rear-view mirror, and premium audio system. The rear of the interior includes a third row of seats on a roller system for easy installation and removal. The rear also includes air-conditioning, audio control, leather seating. Interior options include compact disc changer, Alpine audio upgrades, and heated front seats. The interior comes in two trim colors, medium graphite and medium prairie tan. The interior standard is luxury, so costly additions aren't necessary to improve the luxury of the vehicle.

Performance & Handling

The 1999 Lincoln Navigator has an optional and adjustable four-wheel-drive system that allows for intuitive changes. This makes all terrains easier to handle for an automatic vehicle. Unfortunately, the four-wheel versions mean more money, as these are not the base models. This Automatic Trac Control system works by changes the combination of uses between rear and front wheels. The self-leveling suspension system keeps the ride as comfortable as possible on rougher terrains. The 5.4-liter V-8 engine gives it 300 maximum horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque.

Safety

The 1999 Lincoln Navigator comes standard with a four-wheel anti-lock brake system, driver and passenger side airbags, and fog lights for added safety. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) rated the passenger and driver's front side crash tests as four out of five possible stars in safety. Overall, the Lincoln Navigator is safer than many cheaper sport utility vehicles.

EPA Fuel Economy
