The engine in the GranSport produced 400 hp, an increase over the Coupe’s performance. Maserati GranSport Origins
Available in the U.S. for model years 2005 and 2006, the Maserati GranSport is a four-passenger sports car made by Fiat-owned Maserati. A two-seater Spyder convertible was also available in the U.S. during model years 2006 and 2007.
Known for its high-intensity handling and custom-tailored cockpit as well as its exclusivity, due to small production numbers, the Maserati GranSport is the perfect mix of power and style.
With its more powerful 400 hp engine and its shiftable six-speed automatic, this rear-wheel drive sports car hugs the curves and helps to restore Maserati’s reputation for building powerful and responsive sports cars for street driving.
Not typical in most luxury sports cars, Maserati offers a four-year/50,000 mile warranty on the Gransport. About the Maserati GranSport
As a replacement for the Maserati Coupe, the 2006 Maserati GranSport offers drivers an improved driving experience over the former car. The engine’s intake manifolds were adjusted to increase horsepower, revise suspension, and make other aerodynamic improvements to create a smoother, sportier riding experience.
The 4.2-liter 400 hp DOHC V-8 engine generates 333 lb-ft of torque, and can promise zero to 60 mph in less than five seconds. It has been clocked at a top speed of 180 mph. Maserati GranSport Features
When the Sport button, located on the center console, is pressed, it allows the driver to set performance to more aggressive settings. This allows for faster accelerator response, a stiffer suspension and faster shifting capabilities. When Sport functions are activated, the stability and traction control systems are bypassed.
The Cambiocorsa automated manual transmission is standard, and features paddle shifters near the steering wheel. There is no clutch pedal; the transmission automatically knows when to shift unless the Sport button is pressed. The transmission offers four shifting modes: Normal, Sport, Auto, and Low Grip. By selecting Normal, it offers slightly aggressive shifting, while Sport offers an even more aggressive experience. If Auto is selected, shifting occurs automatically. Sport is used when you want to put the GranSport through its paces. Low Grip offers gentler starts when traction is less than ideal.
The 2006 Maserati GranSport coupe is designed to accommodate four adults in the cabin. The driver and front seat passenger can adjust the eight-way power seats to increase comfort and rear seat leg room is adequate. With rich Italian leather upholstery and carbon fiber trim, the GranSport offers a comfortable and luxurious ride, while still providing the power and performance that Maserati is renowned for.
Standard interior features include eight-way power cloth sport bucket driver and passenger seats with lumbar and seat bottom height adjustments, remote power door locks, power, heated mirrors, electrochromatic inside rearview mirror, cruise control, front console with storage, speed-proportional power steering, transmission controls on steering wheel, speed sensitive wipers, power convertible roof with tonneau cover on the Spyder, rear defogger, automatic climate control, alarm system, aluminum pedals, antilock brakes, traction control, stability control, airbags and a leather and carbon fiber-wrapped power tilt/telescoping steering wheel, element antenna, and an AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system with six speakers and radio data system.
Standard safety equipment includes four-wheel ABS, dual front side-mounted airbags, remote anti-theft alarm system, front and rear ventilated disc brakes, engine immobilizer, fog lights, headrests, front seatbelt pretensioners, and stability control.
The Maserati Gransport’s front suspension is double wishbones with forged aluminum arms and steel dampers, coaxial coils, and springs. The optional Skyhook suspension offers continuously variable aluminum dampers with adaptive damping and acceleration sensors on each wheel. The rear wishbone suspension offers forged aluminum arms, hubs, and an additional radius arm to control toe-in.
The exterior of the GranSport coupe is larger than the previous Coupe. Also, its lowered suspension, 19-inch wheels and mesh chrome grille give it a sportier look. Aerodynamic improvements include a lower front spoiler and flared rocker panels.
The GranSport LE trim package features xenon headlights, heated front seats, Skyhook active suspension, and an upgraded audio system with CD changer. Many of the LE features can be ordered for the Gransport and Gransport Spyder. In addition, Maserati offers out-of-range exterior paint colors and many interior trim color combinations, ensuring that buyers can get the Maserati of their dreams.
The 2006 Maserati GranSport Spyder is a two-seat convertible. Equipped with all the standard equipment afforded the GranSport Coupe, the Spyder has a power top that disappears underneath a hard tonneau cover.
