Maserati Ownership Changes
Only racing vehicles were developed under the leadership of the Maserati brothers. In 1937, the brothers sold their shares of the company to the Orsi family. With this sale, Maserati moved from Bologna to Modena, where it remains today. Although the brothers sold their ownership shares, they remained with the company in engineering roles. In the late 1950s, Maserati retired from producing factory racing vehicles, although they continued for private racers. From then on, the company switched its focus to designing road cars.
Over time, Maserati had several different owners. The French car manufacturer, Citroen, took over Maserati in 1968. While they kept Orsi as the President, the rest of the company changed a great deal. While launching new models, Citroen began producing Maseratis in bulk. Citroen went bankrupt in 1974, followed by Maserati in 1975, but the Italian government stepped in and provided funds to keep the company going.
Maserati in America
Soon after, the leadership of the owner changed hands to Alessandro de Tomaso, an Argentinian racing driver. Under his reign, Benelli motorcycles bought Maserati from Citroen. New models were still launched throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. Sports cars were abandoned and replaced with coupes that had a lower price tag and were more performance-aggressive. Larger vehicles also went into production, and the Chrysler TC by Maserati was jointly produced with Chrysler, since Maserati had been purchased by the American car company.
The current owners, Fiat, purchased Maserati in 1993, and made substantial investments into the company. In 1997, 50 percent of the shares in Maserati were sold by Fiat to Ferrari, and Ferrari took control of the company. The factory in Modena was replaced, allowing further improvements to the Maserati. Ferrari made Maserati its luxury division and invested heavily into the brand, bringing it back into the market.
In 2007, Maserati split from Ferrari and joined with Alfa Romeo, also owned by Fiat. With the new models and heavy investment, the second quarter of 2007 saw Maserati earn a profit for the first time in 17 years under Fiat ownership.
The first road-worthy car produced by Maserati was the A6, which hit the roads in 1947, and continued to be produced through 1957. There were several different versions of the A6, which was named after the six Maserati brothers, Alfieri being the oldest. It was replaced by the 3500 GT in 1957. Both a two-door coupe and convertible model was produced, and these vehicles were the first large volume-produced cars by Maserati. It was also their first introduction to the Gran Turismo (GT) market. The 3500 series was produced until 1964. In 1959, Maserati launched the 5000 GT series, which consisted of 32 two-door coupes in production until 1965.
In 1963, Maserati launched the first of its vehicles to be named after a wind. The Maserati Mistral replaced the 3500 GT. As with the 3500 series, the Mistral was produced as both a coupe and a Spyder, a two-seater convertible version with an emphasis on sporty handling. The Mistral went through several modifications and the last was produced in 1970. Maserati also launched the Quattroporte in 1963, which was a luxury four-door saloon. It went through several model upgrades and is currently in production as the Quattroporte V.
One of the first Maserati models designed specifically for the market in America was the Sebring, which launched in 1965. It was a two-door coupe and convertible that was produced until 1969. From the 1970s to the 2000s, Maserati produced at least 15 different models that were available internationally, which went through several upgrades over time.
Maserati Products and Technologies
The current Maserati models are the Quattroporte V, the GranTurismo and the GranCabrio. Quattroporte is Italian for 4-doors and this is the updated version of the original version that launched in the early 1960s. The current version debuted in 2004 and underwent a refresh in 2009. The Quattroporte S also launched in 2009. The GranTurismo is a two-door, four-seater coupe. It originally premiered in 2007 with several versions launched since then. In total, there are six versions of the GranTurismo available. The GranCabrio is the convertible version of the GranTurismo. It launched in 2010, and there are two different versions available.
