2009 Mazda B-2300 Review

Practical, no frills pickup truck.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 2009 Mazda B-2300 is not an impressive vehicle if you’re looking for originality and frills. Obviously, in response to the economic downturn, the manufacturer went all out to make a simple car for consumers on a budget. It is a plain vehicle with no power windows and power door locks, no trims to choose from, and air-conditioning is not even a standard feature.

The Range

Body styles: Regular cab pickup
Engines: 2.3-liter four-cylinder
Transmissions: five-speed manual, five-speed automatic
Models: B-2300

What's New

It seems the only real change on the 2009 Mazda B-2300 is the year on the model. It still is a 2.3-liter, five-speed manual or optional five-speed automatic transmission engine.

Exterior

For a pickup, the 2009 Mazda B-2300 is impressive and handles rough terrain well, judging from its ground clearance of 6.7 inches. It carries optimum loads in its six-foot cargo bed, which is 31 inches in height, with a floor length of 71.8 inches x width of 52 inches, and a depth of 16.5 inches, without strain. And, true to its manufacturing purpose, you have sufficient cargo room to work with in this model.

The entire 2009 Mazda B-2300 vehicle is 187.5 inches in length, 69.4 inches in width, and has a weight of 4280 lbs., sitting on a 111.6 inch wheelbase, with a standard trailer hitch. The B-2300 comes in four colors, the most flattering being red-fire, which gives the vehicle a regal appearance defying its pickup body.

Interior

The 2009 Mazda B-2300 has one interior color option, medium dark flint. The truck comes with optional air-conditioning, and a standard bench-seat for three. It has head room of 39 inches, shoulder room of 55 inches, leg room of 42.4 inches, and hip room of 53 inches, which makes it fairly comfortable, even for taller and larger drivers and passengers.

Performance & Handling

The 2009 Mazda B-2300 is a rear-drive truck with either five-speed manual or automatic transmission. The manual transmission comes standard, but the automatic transmission is available as an option. It comes in one trim with a 2.3-liter, four cylinder engine delivering 143-hp at 5,250-rpm horse-power, and 154 lb-ft at 3750 rpm torque. It has a towing capacity of 2260 lbs. maximum and has a turning radius of 18.8 inches. For this body type, the 2009 Mazda B-2300 is just as refreshing as its predecessor was and gives pickups a very good name.

Safety

The 2009 Mazda B-2300 comes with standard airbags fitted for all front occupants, has seat belts for all three on the bench seat, and has side airbags as well. It also comes with occupant sensing deactivation technology to protect children and small-bodied adults from airbag impact injuries.

It has a front disc, rear-drum braking system with four-wheel anti-lock brakes (ABS), coil springs, a double wishbone on the front suspension, and a front anti-roll bar is standard. It also comes with a tire pressure gauge to ensure it never runs on a flat.
