2000 Mazda B-2500 Review

Great clone of a Ford, better styling.

Reviewed by Automotive on

The 2000 Mazda B2500 is a mechanical clone of the Ford Ranger, which means great performance and reliability. Mazda takes it one step further by changing the design for the better; the Mazda B2500 offers a lot more in the way of creature comforts.

The Mazda B2500 is best suited for those drivers looking for a pickup truck that is smaller in size and curb weight but still able to handle light loads. It's a great commuter vehicle for those living in rural areas but don’t want a costly full-size pickup.

The Range

Body Styles: pickup truck
Engines: 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine
Transmissions: five-speed manual, four-speed automatic
Models: Mazda B2500 SE, Mazda B2500 SX

What's New

The 2000 Mazda B2500 has dropped the unattractive Troy Lee edition. All SX models include P225/70R15 tires, which have better grip and durability. Meanwhile, the SE models now include standard air-conditioning.

The 2000 Mazda B2500 is available in a regular cab or extended cab model. The extended cab model offers two or four doors. It's recommended to buy the four-door model if possible, since this provides better access to the rear cargo space area and the jump seats.

The 2000 Mazda B2500 SX regular cab's standard features include a rear bumper step, power brakes, and 15-inch wheels, while a bed liner and horizontal sliding window is optional. The SE models offer the sliding window as part of the package, and a bed liner is still optional.

The 2000 Mazda B2500 interior is pretty bare bones and does come in either a regular cab or extended cab version. The extended cab models have extra space in the rear with two jumps seats. The jumps seats are pretty small and are not suitable for adult passengers, but it's suitable for children or can be used as a spare shelf to put extra equipment.

The 2000 Mazda B2500 SE extended cab includes standard features such as a center console, lighted entry system, jump seats, tachometer, cloth seating, front split bench seating, power steering, air-conditioning, and a CD audio player. Optional features include cruise control, a tilt steering wheel, and a manual horizontal rear window.

The 2000 Mazda B2500 SX regular cab has vinyl seating instead of cloth, and lacks many of the amenities of the SE model. This is the base vehicle if consumers are looking for a simple pickup for light duties. A convenience package is available along with power accessories. These items are included in the SX model as standard equipment but available for the SE.

Performance & Handling

The 2000 Mazda B2500 comes equipped with a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine that produces 119 horsepower and 146 lb-ft of torque. The engine is wed with a five-speed manual as standard equipment or an optional four-speed automatic. It's a light weight truck that isn’t really equipped for heavy lifting, but if shoppers are looking for a work vehicle, the B3000 or B4000 is a better bet. However, if they're looking for a truck that can handle some heavy lifting, the B2500 more than capable. Unfortunately, four-wheel drive isn’t an option; consumers will have to upgrade to the B3000 or the B4000 for that.

The 2000 Mazda B2500 comes equipped with driver and passenger front airbags and rear-wheel anti-lock brakes. The NHTSA gave the Mazda B2500 four out of four stars for passenger, driver, and front-side impacts. The IIHS gave the Mazda B3000 an overall score of ?acceptable,? the second best rating, for crash tests.

EPA Fuel Economy

Mazda B2500, five-speed manual: 20/24 mpg city/highway
Mazda B2500, four-speed automatic: 18/23 mpg city/highway
