4WD compact pickup with extended cab flexibility.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 2007 Mazda B-4000 is a compact pickup truck that is available with an extended cab called the Cab Plus 4. It comes in two trim levels: the Base Cab Plus 4 and the Cab Plus 4 SE. Both trim levels are equipped with a four-liter, 207-hp, V-6 engine and a five-speed manual transmission with part-time four-wheel drive. A five-speed automatic transmission is optional.

The Range

Body Styles: extended cab compact pickup
Engines: 4.0-liter V-6
Transmissions: five-speed manual, five-speed automatic
Models: Mazda B-4000 Cab Plus 4, Mazda B-4000 Cab Plus 4 SE

What's New

Tire pressure monitoring is now standard.

Exterior

The B-4000 has a wheelbase of 125.9 inches and a 6.4-foot bed. The truck is similar in look to its Ford truck relative. The SE adds a chrome grille and bumpers as well as skid plates and a trailer hitch. The extended cab has two rear-hinged doors to access the rear jump seats. An optional bedliner is available. Unfortunately, the B-Series of trucks is long past due a makeover. The competitors have more modern exterior styling available as well as updated suspensions. Standard equipment on the Base B-4000 Cab Plus 4 includes 15-inch steel wheels with all-terrain tires, variable intermittent wipers, painted bumpers, and trailer wiring. Standard equipment on the B-4000 Cab Plus 4 SE includes sixteen-inch alloy wheels with all-terrain tires, privacy glass, manual sliding rear window, chrome grille, skid plates, chrome bumpers, trailer hitch, and foglights.

Interior

The interior of the Mazda 2007 B-4000 is rather plain, if not functional. The Base model has only an AM/FM radio; the SE adds a CD player. The front seat is a 40/60-split bench, which can seat three. The rear contains two jump seats. When the jump seats are folded up, the space can be used for storing cargo. The SE offers power door locks, air-conditioning, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and cruise control. Standard equipment on the Base B-4000 Cab Plus 4 includes cloth upholstery, 40/60 split-bench front seat, split-folding rear seatback, jump seats, rear cup holders, front console with storage, 12-volt power outlet, air-conditioning, tachometer, and AM/FM stereo with two speakers. Standard equipment on the B-4000 Cab Plus 4 SE includes power door locks, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and AM/FM/CD audio system with four speakers.

Performance & Handling

The B-4000 is equipped with a four-liter V-6 engine that generates 207 hp and 238 ft-lb of torque. Acceleration is good, and the ride quality is generally good, though more bumps are felt with the all-terrain tires. When properly equipped, maximum towing capacity on the B-4000 is 5600 pounds. Standard equipment on the Base B-4000 Cab Plus 4 includes mechanical center differential, electronic hi-lo gear selection, center locking differential, double wishbone front independent suspension and solid live axle rear suspension, and front and rear stabilizer bars. Standard equipment on the B-4000 Cab Plus 4 SE includes cruise control functions.

Safety

Standard equipment on the Base B-4000 Cab Plus 4 includes a four-wheel anti-lock braking system, ventilated front disc / rear drum brakes, electronic brake force distribution, and tire pressure monitoring.
