What's New

The Mazda CX-7, a midsize crossover SUV starts new for 2007.

Exterior

The exterior of the 2007 Mazda CX-7 has a fender line similar to Mazda’s RX-8. The front end features dual-bezel headlights and a five-point grille, like many passenger cars. Small rear quarter windows curve around to the liftgate, which features clear-lens taillights. Dual exhaust pipes and a rear roof spoiler round out the appearance. The CX-7 offers ground clearance, reaching 8.1 inches, and it sports 18-inch alloy wheels.

Standard equipment on the Sport model includes 18-inch alloy wheels with P235/60R H all-season tires, a rear spoiler, variable intermittent wipers, privacy glass, a rear defogger, an intermittent rear wiper, a rear liftgate door, power door locks, power windows, and power mirrors. The Grand Touring model features fog lights, auto delay-off and dusk-sensing xenon HID headlights, and power heated mirrors.

Interior

The interior of the 2007 Mazda CX-7 also recalls the RX-8 and Miata, as it includes the sporty steering wheel and instrument cluster from those vehicles. A large, lockable center storage compartment secures gear. Cargo capacity totals 29.8 cubic feet with the seats in place; with the second-row seats folded flat, cargo capacity grows to 58.6 cubic feet.

Standard features include a height-adjustable driver’s seat, cloth upholstery, bucket front seats, a split-folding rear seatback, rear ventilation ducts, cruise control, a front console with storage, speed-proportional power steering, a tilt steering wheel with audio and cruise controls, a 12V power outlet, interior air filtration, air-conditioning, a tachometer, and an AM/FM/CD audio system with four speakers. The Grand Touring models offer external temperature display. Equipment exclusive to the Touring model includes an eight-way power heated driver’s seat with lumbar support and height adjustment, leather upholstery, and leather interior trim. Optional equipment includes a navigation system, a park assist system with rear-view camera, keyless ignition, a moonroof, and an upgraded Bose audio system with an AM/FM stereo and a six-disc CD changer.

Performance & Handling

The Mazda CX-7 employs a turbocharged, 2.3-liter, four-cylinder engine that generates 244 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. This pairs with a six-speed shiftable automatic, which provides the driver with an automatic or manual option. The CX-7 offers either front drive or all-wheel drive; the all-wheel-drive system routes all of the power to the front wheels in typical driving conditions. If limited traction causes problems, then 50 percent of the power gets redirected to the rear wheels, which makes the all-wheel-drive CX-7 a good choice when driving on icy or snowy roads. The all-wheel-drive vehicles feature a mechanical center differential, as well as center and rear limited-slip differentials.

As a crossover SUV, the CX-7 prefers on-road driving; four-wheel drive remains unavailable, and Mazda offers no high-low gearing option.

The 2007 Mazda CX-7 clocks a zero-to-60-mph time of 7.7 seconds. Acceleration feels brisk, and braking is excellent. The vehicle responds well to steering and has a firm suspension. The CX-7 suits drivers who enjoy a sportier driving experience. When properly equipped, the CX-7 reaches a towing capacity of 2000 pounds.

Safety

Standard safety equipment on the 2007 Mazda CX-7 includes four-wheel ABS, traction control, stability control, a full complement of six airbags, tire pressure monitoring, MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear independent suspensions, front and rear stabilizer bars, front and rear ventilated disc brakes, and electronic brake force distribution.
