2010 Mazda CX-9 Review

The family-friendly SUV with power, performance, and style

Reviewed by Automotive on

In a Nutshell
The 2010 Mazda CX-9 is a large, family-friendly crossover sport utility vehicle (SUV) with three rows of seating to accommodate up to seven passengers and a large cargo area with 17.6 cubic feet of space. Sporting a 3.7-liter V-6 engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, the Mazda CX-9 handles rough and smooth terrain, is easy to handle, and does well under all road conditions.

Boasting plenty of entertainment and comfort features, the Mazda CX-9 exhibits refined handling in spite of its large size. Interestingly, the iconic smiling grille on the CX-9 makes it aerodynamic, even as its exterior displays rear garnishments, rear lamps, and new mirrors. An exceptional package at a great price, the CX-9 rates high on safety with excellent crash test scores, but as a large SUV with so much on its wheels, it's no surprise its fuel economy is in the 15 mpg city / 21 highway range.

New for 2010

For 2010, the Mazda CX-9 received new chrome interior accents, new seat cloth, and softer leather. Also available are a redesigned rear climate control console, refreshed keyless entry and start system, a 4.3-inch LCD, and two-stage heated seats, which are standard on the Touring and Grand Touring trims and optional on the Sport trim. For the first time, a back-up camera is optionally available.

Essentials

Engine: 3.7L V-6
Transmission: 6-speed automatic
Body Style: SUV
Trims: Sport Sport Utility, Touring Sport Utility, Grand Touring Sport Utility

On the Outside

The Mazda CX-9 was redesigned to achieve a "sophistical appearance." The result is a thick chrome bar that makes the front grille "pop," while the sleek profile, raked windshield, and muscular edges convey a spirited sport attitude.

From the Inside

Standard on the Mazda CS-9 are three-zone climate control, power windows, and lots of rear storage. A leather wrapped steering wheel, shift knob, and center armrest, as well as Bluetooth connectivity, are available. When both second and third rows are folded down, a spacious 100.7 cubic feet of cargo room appears.

Driving Performance

The 2010 Mazda CX-9's 3.7-liter V-6 engine generates 263 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque, making it a big, fun ride, thanks also to the fully independent suspension in front and rear. The all-wheel drive versions are capable of as much as 50 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels, if necessary.

Safety Equipment

Standard safety equipment on the Mazda CX-9 includes driver and passenger dual front, side, and side curtain airbags. Also, standard are dynamic stability control and traction control. On Grand Touring trim, a blind spot monitoring system is available.
