2011 Mazda Mazda2 Review

Cool style for little money

Reviewed by Automotive on

In a Nutshell
The 2011 Mazda Mazda2 is an economical hatchback with a bit of a quirky style but also a lot of practicality and comfort. Powered by a 1.5 liter four-cylinder engine paired to either a five speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission, the Mazda2 is a spirited little car with a lot of pizzazz.

The cabin of the Mazda2 is open, comfortable, and very spacious, with contouring, smooth shapes, storage bins, folding flat rear seats, cup holders, and more. The Mazda2 has adequate safety equipment but is not best of class in this area. Its fuel economy, however, at 29 mpg city/35 mpg highway, makes this affordable fun car even more affordable and fun.

New for 2011

The Mazda2 is all-new for 2011. The Sport trim is entry level but has plenty of interior comforts and technology. The Touring edition adds a few more standard accessories, such as chrome exhaust tips, fog lights, 15-inch alloy wheels, and a trip computer.

Essentials

Engine: 1.5L I-4
Transmissions: 5-speed manual, 4-speed automatic
Body Style: Hatchback
Trims: Sport Hatchback, Touring Hatchback

On the Outside

The ever "smiling" 2011 Mazda2 has short front and rear overhangs that give it a sporty look.

From the Inside

Standard on the Mazda2 are air conditioning, power door locks with keyless entry, tilt steering wheel, 60/40 folding rear seats, and a four speaker AM/FM/CD/MP3 stereo. The Touring trim has six speakers.

Driving Performance

Powered by a 100-horsepower 1.5-liter four cylinder engine making 98 pound-feet of torque, the Mazda2 won't win any street races. However, it makes up for its lack of speed with high mpg ratings -- 28 city/35 highway with manual and 28 city/34 highway with automatic -- that are way above average.

Safety Equipment

Standard safety equipment on the Mazda2 are driver and passenger front and side airbags, side airbag curtains, and side impact door beams. It also has a crushable pedal assembly, anti-lock brakes (ABS), and dynamic stability control with traction control.

Gas Mileage

28 mpg city/35 mpg highway (manual); 28 mpg city/34 mpg highway (automatic)
