Overview

The 2007 Mazda MAZDA5 classifies as a small minivan that comes in three trim levels: Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring.

The Range

Body Styles: compact minivan
Engines: 2.3-liter four-cylinder
Transmissions: five-speed manual, four-speed automatic
Models: Mazda MAZDA5 Sport, Mazda MAZDA5 Touring, Mazda MAZDA5 Grand Touring

What's New

The top-of-the-line Grand Touring trim level begins this year. It features xenon HID headlights, leather upholstery, and heated front seats.

Exterior

The exterior of the 2007 MAZDA5 offers sliding rear doors and a rear liftgate. Fog lights and xenon HID headlights provide options. The MAZDA5 sits on a 108.3-inch wheelbase and measures 181.5 inches in length. Standard equipment on the base Sport model includes 17-inch alloy wheels, intermittent wipers, a rear defogger, an intermittent rear wiper, power door locks, power mirrors, power windows, and a rear liftgate.

Touring models add a rear spoiler, a power glass sunroof, and standard fog lights. Xenon HID headlights come standard on the 2007 Mazda MAZDA5 Grand Touring models. A moonroof remains optional.

Interior

The MAZDA5 seats up to six in its three rows of seats. The second-row seats recline, and they slide forward, providing easy entry to the third row. Theater-style seating allows even the third-row passengers a view of the road through the windshield. Legroom seems tight in the third row; they should probably be reserved for children.

The interior feels roomy, and the driver’s controls sit within easy reach. The second- and third-row seats fold flat, providing up to 44 cubic feet of cargo capacity. Standard features for the base model include a driver’s seat with lumbar support and height adjustment, cloth upholstery, bucket front seats, twin manual rear sliding doors, a folding rear seatback, manually folding split-bench third-row seats, cruise control, a front console with storage, electric speed-proportional power steering, a 12V power outlet, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel with audio and cruise control functions, interior air filtration, air-conditioning, a tachometer, and an AM/FM/CD audio system with four speakers.

The Touring model adds a leather-wrapped steering wheel, external temperature display, and an audio system with an AM/FM stereo, a six-disc CD changer, MP3 compatibility, and six speakers.

Standard equipment that remains exclusive to the 2007 Mazda MAZDA5 Grand Touring model includes heated driver and passenger seats, leather upholstery, and climate control. Optional equipment includes a voice-activated navigation system for the Touring and Grand Touring models.

Performance & Handling

The 2007 Mazda MAZDA5 comes equipped with a 2.3-liter, 153-hp, four-cylinder engine that produces 148 lb-ft of torque. It pairs with either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission. However, the Grand Touring only offers the automatic. The engine has no problem getting you around town with your family, but acceleration feels a bit slow on highway on-ramps. Zero-to-60-mph times reach an estimated 10.1 seconds.

Handling seems responsive and quick, as the MAZDA5 uses the same suspension as the sporty MAZDA3. The speed-proportional power steering responds well, and the MAZDA5’s small turning radius makes it a snap to get out of tight parking spaces.

Safety

Standard safety equipment includes four-wheel ABS with electronic brake force distribution, which sends braking power to the wheels that need the most power. Front- and side-mounted airbags and side curtain airbags (for all three rows of seating) also come standard. Other features include MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear independent suspensions, front and rear stabilizer bars, emergency braking assist, and ventilated front disc and solid rear disc brakes.
