The Mazda MAZDASPEED3 starts new in the 2007 model year. It serves as a front-drive, performance-based version of the MAZDA3, equipped with a turbocharged, 2.3-liter, four-cylinder engine and a six-speed manual transmission.

Exterior

The exterior of the 2007 Mazda MAZDASPEED3 features unique look in the front and rear, fog lights, and ground effect lights. It uses 18-inch alloy wheels and low-profile performance tires. The hatchback also features a rear liftgate with a spoiler and a chrome exhaust tip. Additional standard equipment for the Sport model includes variable intermittent wipers, a rear defogger, an intermittent rear wiper, and power mirrors.

Standard equipment that remains exclusive to the Grand Touring trim level includes variable intermittent rain-sensing wipers and dusk-sensing xenon HID headlights.

Interior

The interior of the MAZDASPEED3 features front sport seats with enhanced bolstering. The cabin looks well-built with the same easy-to-read gauges found in the MAZDA3. The MAZDASPEED3 sports aluminum pedals and a red/black color scheme. It seats up to five; the rear seat easily accommodates adults under six-feet in height. The split-folding rear seatback folds down to increase cargo space to 31 cubic feet; with the seats in place, the cargo capacity totals 17 cubic feet behind the rear seat.

Base model interior features include a driver’s seat with lumbar support and height adjustment, premium cloth upholstery, sport front seats, a split-folding rear seatback, rear ventilation ducts, cruise control, a front console with storage, electric speed-proportional power steering, a 12V power outlet, a leather-wrapped tilt/telescoping steering wheel with audio and cruise control functions, interior air filtration, climate control, leather trim, a tachometer, external temperature display, and an AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system with six speakers.

Grand Touring models feature leather and cloth upholstery, a trip computer, and a Bose premium audio system with an AM/FM stereo, a six-disc CD changer, MP3 compatibility, seven speakers, and a subwoofer. A navigation system with voice activation and a LCD display screen marks the only optional equipment, available only on the Grand Touring model.

Performance & Handling

The front-drive MAZDASPEED3 is a pleasure to drive. Designed to appeal to driving enthusiasts, it offers the acceleration and superb handling of a sport sedan that costs three times as much.

The 2.3-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder pairs with a six-speed manual transmission and generates 263 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. Zero-to-60-mph sprint times clock in at 5.9 seconds. The performance-tuned suspension enhances the driving experience. The speed-proportional power steering feels responsive, and braking ability is excellent.

Safety

Standard safety equipment includes four-wheel ABS, stability control, traction control, front-seat side-impact airbags, and side curtain airbags. In government crash testing the 2007 Mazda MAZDASPEED3 receives four stars (out of five) in frontal-impact testing. The Insurance Institute Highway Safety rates the vehicle as ?good? in frontal-impact crashes.

Safety features for all models include front limited-slip differential, MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear independent suspensions, front and rear stabilizer bars, emergency braking assist, electronic brake force distribution, ventilated front disc and solid rear disc brakes, and tire pressure monitoring.
