2007 Mazda MAZDASPEED6 Review

A high-performance vehicle with a thrilling driving experience and the comfort of a midsize sedan.

Reviewed by Automotive on

The 2007 Mazda MAZDASPEED6 serves as a midsize, performance-tuned sport sedan version of the MAZDA6. Equipped with a turbocharged engine, a manual transmission, and all-wheel drive, it offers acceleration and handling in a civilized vehicle. The MAZDASPEED6 comes in two trim levels: Sport and Grand Touring.

The Range

Body Styles: sedan
Engines: 2.3-liter four-cylinder
Transmissions: Six-speed manual
Models: Mazda MAZDASPEED6 Sport, Mazda MAZDASPEED6 Grand Touring

What's New

Introduced in 2006, no changes appear in the MAZDASPEED6 for 2007.

The exterior of the 2007 Mazda MAZDASPEED6 features an upper grille that works as an air intake for the turbocharger; the lower grille and aerodynamic front bumper hint at the car’s high-performance reputation. A lip-style spoiler sits atop the trunk. Perched on 18-inch wheels and low-profile performance tires, the MAZDASPEED6 looks sporty enough to make driving a thrill and civilized enough to transport the family on outings.

Standard equipment on the 2007 MAZDASPEED6 Sport includes 18-inch alloy wheels with P215/45R18 93Y performance tires, a rear spoiler, variable intermittent wipers, a rear defogger, and power mirrors. The Grand Touring adds power heated mirrors and offers an optional sunroof.

The MAZDASPEED6 sits on a wheelbase of 105.3 inches and reaches an overall length of 186.8 inches.

The Mazda MAZDASPEED6 seats five within its well-built interior. The sport front seats feel comfortable and well-bolstered. The dashboard gauges and controls prove easy to see and simple to operate. Back-seat legroom may not be adequate for taller adults, but it offers plenty of room for children.

The trunk provides 12.4 cubic feet of cargo space. Unfortunately, the 2007 Mazda MAZDASPEED6 does not include a split-folding rear seatback to increase cargo capacity.

Standard features for the MAZDASPEED6 include a driver’s seat with height adjustment, cloth upholstery, sport front seats, rear ventilation ducts, cruise control, a front console with storage, power door locks, power windows, speed-proportional power steering, a 12V power outlet, a leather-wrapped tilt/telescoping steering wheel with audio and cruise control functions, interior air filtration, climate control, leather and carbon interior trim, a tachometer, external temperature display, and a 200-watt Bose premium audio system with an AM/FM/ radio, a six-disc CD changer, and seven total Bose premium speakers and a subwoofer.

Standard equipment exclusive to the Grand Touring includes an eight-way power heated driver’s seat with lumbar support and height adjustment, a keyless ignition, and leather upholstery.

Additional options for the MAZDASPEED6 include satellite radio, a navigation system with an LCD display screen, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror.

Performance & Handling

The 2007 Mazda MAZDASPEED6 comes equipped with a turbocharged, 2.3-liter, 274-hp, four-cylinder engine that generates 280 lb-ft of torque. The active all-wheel-drive system varies the power sent to the front or rear wheels depending on steering angle, traction, and yaw. Sport, Normal, and Snow modes can be selected to optimize traction based on road conditions. All-wheel drive especially attracts drivers who face snowy or icy roads in winter. Acceleration feels brisk, offering a zero to 60 mph time of 6.1 seconds. Stability control and the performance-tuned suspension work to make cornering a pleasure. When combined with the responsive steering and ABS, the MAZDASPEED6 creates a performance sedan that can handle whatever driving conditions it encounters.

The sport-tuned suspension in the MAZDASPEED6 offers thicker stabilizer bars, tighter springs, and a reinforced rear cross-member. The brakes get larger than those on the MAZDA6 to provide the braking power necessary for such a powerful vehicle.

Standard safety equipment for the 2007 Mazda MAZDASPEED6 includes four-wheel ABS, stability control, traction control, tire pressure monitoring, front airbags, side-impact airbags, side-curtain airbags, electronic brake force distribution, ventilated front disc and solid rear disc brakes, a remote anti-theft alarm system with an engine immobilizer, and fog lights.
