The 2005 Mazda Miata MX-5 comes in many new colors this year. The exterior and interior features aim to improve its looks. The safety rating was about average for the Miata this year while the fuel economy is pleasing this year. This is a fun car to drive with above average power and performance ratings.

The 2005 Mazda Miata MX-5 comes in five colors with black vinyl manual convertible top with rear glass window and vinyl boot cover, body-colored aluminum hood, bumpers, power exterior mirrors and door handles, projector low-beam headlights, front clear-lens halogen fog lights, solar-control tinted windshield with sunshade, and two-speed fixed-intermittent windshield wipers. The 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels come with locks and high-performance tires. A mini spare wheel and tire is also included on the Miata. An optional detachable hardtop comes with a glass rear window. Dealer-installed options include an optional aggressive look appearance package with large front air dam, side sills, and rear mudguards. A Sports package provides small side sills and rear mudguards. Headlamp and tail lamp bezels are also optional, along with front and rear mudguards, chrome fuel door, perimeter shock sensor alarm, and rear spoiler.


The 2005 Mazda Miata MX-5 comes with reclining, high back bucket seats with forward and backward sliding feature, black cloth upholstery, center console with lockable storage and dual-covered cup holders, carpeted floor mats, leather-wrapped three-spoke steering wheel with silver stitching, and white instrument gauges with chrome bezels and black lettering. Other standard features include power windows with a driver side one-touch-down feature, remote fuel door, trunk and hood release, engine immobilizer, air-conditioning, rear window defogger, locking glove box, cigarette lighter with an ash tray, and 12-volt power outlet. Additionally, there is silver finish interior trim, door map pockets, day and night rearview mirror, driver and passenger visor vanity mirrors, passenger side seat-back pocket, wind blocker anti-draft panel with storage pouch, and fully-carpeted trunk area with a carpeted floor mat. The four speaker audio system is an AM/FM/CD player stereo with a digital clock and power antenna. The LS model has black or parchment leather seating surfaces, a leather-wrapped three-spoke steering wheel with silver stitching, power door locks, cruise control, remote keyless illuminated entry with a panic feature and retractable key, and an upgraded AM/FM/CD player Bose 225-watt stereo with door-mounted tweeter speakers and speed-sensing automatic volume control.

An optional convenience package comes with power door locks, cruise control, remote keyless entry with retractable key, tweeter speakers, a cargo net, cassette player, auto-dimming mirror with compass and outside temperature display, door edge guards, and an in-dash six-disc CD changer.

Performance & Handling

This vehicle comes with a 1.8-liter, inline four-cylinder engine, which is rated at 142 horsepower, which provides for 125 lb-ft of torque. The transmission comes in a five-speed manual, a four-speed automatic and a six-speed manual. It comes with a variable intake control system, four-wheel independent double wishbone suspension with coil springs, gas-filled shock absorbers, and stabilizer bars for the front and rear. Also included is a suspension tower brace, engine speed-sensitive variable power rack and pinion steering, four-wheel power front ventilated brakes, and rear solid disc brakes. The vehicle is rear drive, which can be problematic in harsh weather as it makes it difficult to maneuver safely. An optional suspension package adds a sport suspension with Billstein Shock Absorbers and limited slip differential.


The 2005 Mazda Miata MX-5 earned five out of five stars in its rollover and passenger front impact ratings, four stars on its driver front impact rating, and three stars for driver side impact ratings. Passenger side impact ratings were not tested. The Miata comes with a standard anti-lock brake system with electronic brake force distribution, driver and passenger second generation air bags, passenger side air bag deactivation switch, three-point safety belts with pre-tensioners and force limiters, child seat anchor, five mpg bumpers, side impact door beams, and an internal trunk release system.
