2007 Mazda Miata Review

An affordable roadster convertible that is fun to drive and offers the nimble handling and performance that's desired.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata is a two-seater roadster that offers a fun and sporty ride. Known for its timeless styling and ultra-responsive handling, the Miata has been satisfying drivers since its introduction in 1990. It is available in four trim levels: SV, Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring. All of the trim levels are equipped with a two-liter 166-hp four-cylinder engine. Transmission options include a five-speed manual on the SV and Sport trim levels, a six-speed manual, or a six-speed shiftable automatic transmission, which are available on all trim levels except the SV. A power retractable hard top has been added this year and is available on all trim levels except the SV.

The Range

Body Styles: Roadster
Engines: 2.0-liter four-cylinder
Transmissions: Five-speed manual, six-speed manual, six-speed shiftable automatic
Models: MX-5 Miata SV, MX-5 Miata Sport, MX-5 Miata Touring, MX-5 Miata Grand Touring

What's New

A power-retractable hardtop is available this year on all trim levels except SV.

Exterior

The exterior of the 2007 MX-5 Miata offers the tapered nose and tail from the original model of the vehicle. The Miata is equipped with 16-inch wheels and low-profile performance tires (17-inch wheels are optional), hinting at the sportiness drivers will find behind the wheel. The vinyl soft top folds and fits flush, creating a single line to the trunk. The power-retractable hard top splits into two pieces when the button is pushed; a third piece acts as a tonneau cover that lifts up to allow the top to come down into the trunk. The tonneau cover then lowers. The entire operation takes 12 seconds.

Interior

The 2007 Mazda Miata seats two comfortably but a bit snugly. The glass covering the instrument cluster is coated to allow easy visibility, even when the top is down on a sunny day. Storage compartments sit behind the seats to allow you to stow some items. The trunk’s cargo capacity is only 5.3 cubic feet and even less when the hardtop is down. The hard top provides insulation from road noise when it is up and only takes 12 seconds to be raised or lowered.

Standard equipment on the 2007 Mazda Miata SV includes power windows, power mirrors, cloth upholstery, bucket front seats, front console with storage, tilt steering wheel, 12-volt power outlet, tachometer, and AM/FM/CD audio system with four speakers. Standard equipment introduced on the Sport includes a leather-wrapped steering wheel and air-conditioning. The Touring trim level adds leather-wrapped tilt steering wheel with audio and cruise control functions, leather interior trim, and AM/FM/CD audio system with six speakers. Standard equipment on the Grand Touring trim level includes heated leather driver and passenger seats, leather-wrapped tilt steering wheel with cruise and audio control functions and paddle shifters, and Bose premium audio system with AM/FM/CD and seven speakers. The Convenience package upgrades the Sport trim level with power locks/keyless entry, steering wheel-mounted audio control functions, covered storage containers behind the seats, and ""global open,"" which lowers both windows at one time. An interior trim package adds aluminum cabin accents.

Performance & Handling

The 2007 Mazda Miata’s two-liter, four-cylinder engine generates 166 hp and 140 ft-lb of torque. Whether consumers opt for the manual or shiftable automatic transmission, performance is evident. Acceleration is brisk with zero-to-60-mph times at 7.5 seconds. Steering is nimble and responsive. Overall, the Miata is a pleasure to drive.

Safety

The 2007 Mazda Miata's standard safety equipment includes four-wheel ABS and side-mounted airbags. If consumers order run-flat tires, they also get the tire pressure monitoring system. Stability control is optional on the Grand Touring model.
