2022 Mazda MX-30 MODEL OVERVIEW

Pros

  • Multiple charging options
  • Unique exterior design
  • Use of sustainable interior materials

Cons

  • Less power than others in segment
  • Hybrid's "rotary power" not what it seems
  • Only available in California (at first)

The MX-30 subcompact SUV is Mazda's first electric vehicle and the first in a wave of additional electrified models coming from the brand. Along with the MX-30 EV, expect a plug-in hybrid EV version of the new SUV as well as a plug-in hybrid for Mazda's new large platform and a traditional hybrid for a new American-made crossover. The MX-30 rides on the same platform as the compact sedan and CX-30 subcompact SUV.

Performance

The Mazda MX-30 EV employs a 35.5 kWh lithium-ion battery and a single FWD electric motor that makes a peak 144 hp and 200 lb-ft of torque. The electric SUV is also equipped with Mazda's yaw-controlling electric G-Vectoring Control Plus (e-GVC) feature for improved cornering and stability. Not all recent Mazdas have impressed us dynamically, so we look forward to seeing whether the MX-30 is as fun to drive as the CX-5 or if it delivers a more forgettable driving experience.

Design Highlights

Unlike other Mazda SUVs, the MX-30 has a distinctive look, with a smaller grille up front and at the rear CX-30-aping circular taillights in housings that pop out from the bodywork. A look at the SUV's side profile reveals rear-hinged secondary doors on each side that further distinguish the MX-30, especially when opened, which exposes the absence of a traditional B pillar. Additionally, the Mazda MX-30 is available in two-tone exterior colors.

Inside, the cabin makes an impression with a new floating center console and through the use of cork, recycled fabrics, and other sustainable materials.

Technology

The MX-30 EV can be charged via Level 2 and DC fast charging stations. Using DC fast charging, the MX-30's 35.5 kWh lithium-ion battery can be charged to 80 percent in about 36 minutes. As mentioned previously, the MX-30 will also come equipped with the newest version of Mazda's e-GVC vehicle dynamics and control systems, and a 7.0-inch touchscreen below the infotainment system's display is used to operate the vehicle's climate control functions—like a Range Rover.

Return of the Mazda Rotary—Sort Of

Enthusiasts will do a double take when they learn of the Mazda MX-30 hybrid's rotary powertrain—that is, until they realize the system uses it not to drive the wheels but to replenish the SUV's batteries. Characterized as a rotary generator, the evolved Wankel engine will serve as a range extender for the MX-30 hybrid's powertrain. That said, according to a recent report, the rotary range extender may be dead on arrival.
