The 2001 Mazda Protege is an affordable, reliable sedan that’s a terrific ride for the money. While Mazda doesn’t always lead its class in the various cars it produces, when it comes to economy sedans, it has definitely done something right. The Protege makes a great first car for a young driver, second car for a family, or even a regular everyday car.
The 2001 Mazda Protege comes in four trim levels: the no-frills DX; the LX, which features power door locks, mirrors and windows, cruise control and an in-dash CD player; and the ES, which upgrades to 16-inch alloy wheels and a larger, two-liter engine.

The 2001 Mazda Protege's redesigned interior is designed for driver comfort, and it does the job with a height adjustable driver seat on most models, bucket front seats, and good roominess. There’s plenty of comfort for rear seat passengers as well. The interior comes in beige, gray, or off-black and features tilt steering and a front storage console. Most models feature power locks, mirrors, and windows and an in-dash CD player. Consumers can also find a leather steering wheel and leather trim on the MP3.
Performance & Handling
The 2001 Mazda Protege features a stiff body and tight four-wheel independent suspension, which means great handling, even under tougher driving conditions. The base model features a 1.6-liter double overhead cam four-cylinder engine offering 103 horsepower and 106 lb-ft of torque. Meanwhile, the two-liter engine on upgraded models gives 130 horses and 135 lb-ft of torque.
