2007 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class Review

Has set a proper standard among touring coupes on the market and excels in technology, safety, performance, and luxury.

Reviewed by Automotive on

The Mercedes-Benz CL-Class is a powerful and luxurious coupe with a sumptuous interior. It is powerful enough engine to be a lot of fun to drive, but is still roomy enough to accommodate two passengers in the rear seat in relative comfort. It's been around for a number of years and has undergone many changes, but essentially it's just a two-door version of S-Class sedan. It is renowned for being packed with the latest technology, and for its safety features and extreme comfort. It has to be one of the most luxurious cars on the road while still remaining relatively affordable, but it's also one of the largest coupes around, which can make it difficult to park in tight spots.

The Range

Body Styles: luxury coupe
Engines: 5.5-liter V-8, 6.3-liter V-8, V-12
Transmissions: seven-speed automatic
Models: Mercedes-Benz CL-Class CL550, Mercedes-Benz CL-Class CL 63 AMG, Mercedes-Benz CL-Class CL600

What's New

The line-topping coupe of the 2007 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class has been redesigned for the model year 2007, offering the CL500 and CL600, which utilize a 5.5-liter V-8 and twin-turbo V-12, respectively.

The 2007 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class is available in three different trims. The CL550 is luxuriously equipped, and standard features include a satellite radio, a hard drive-based navigation system, an in-dash CD/DVD changer, Bluetooth connectivity, a surround sound audio system, and 14-way power heated front seats. Optional features available for the CL550 include the AMG Sport Package and two different premium packages. The first premium package includes heated and ventilated front seats, and a keyless go system. The second premium package includes everything in the first package, plus a nighttime vision assist system and upgraded front seats. A radar-based adaptive cruise control system makes driving in traffic far more relaxing, and is perfect for busy commuters. The CL63 AMG has similar standard equipment to the CL550 but is more performance-oriented. It has a sport-tuned suspension, multi-contour leather sports seats, and high-performance brakes. The CL600 is considerably more expensive and includes most of the features of the CL550, plus the contents of the premium packages as standard.

The 2007 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class is every bit as luxurious as you'd expect, and is very elegant. It looks exactly how you want a high-end luxury coupe to appear, and all the controls are intuitively located and are clear and easy to read. The seats are supremely comfortable, especially those with optional features such as massage, heating, and ventilation. There is plenty of space in the rear for adults to be comfortable on longer journeys. The trunk has a cargo capacity of 17.4 cubic feet.

Performance & Handling

The 2007 Mercedes-Benz CL550 is fitted with a powerful 5.5-liter V-8, which produces 382 hp and 391 lb-ft of torque, and it's coupled with a seven-speed automatic transmission. The CL63 AMG is fitted with a 6.3-liter, V-8 engine, which produces 518 hp with 465 lb-ft torque. The CL600 has a twin turbo, V-12 engine, which produces 510 hp with 612 lb-ft torque. The driving experience is just as smooth and quiet as expected, and Mercedes-Benz active body control is fitted as standard across all models. It's an advanced suspension system, which helps reduce body roll even on tight corners.

Mercedes are known for the impressive level of safety equipment, and the CL is no exception. This model includes driver's knee airbags, front airbags, seat-mounted airbags, and curtain airbags. It also comes with Mercedes’ innovative braking system, with the ability to monitor the cars positioning on the road. If it senses an impending accident, it automatically begins to prepare the vehicle for impact and applies 40 percent of the braking capacity to reduce the likelihood of a collision. The adaptive brake lights on the CL600 blink rapidly during this emergency braking process to help avoid the chance of rear collisions. Other safety features include adaptive headlights, stability control, traction control, and anti-lock brakes with brake assist.
