Mercedes-Benz CL-Class

The Mercedes-Benz CL-Class debuted in 1998. The style and performance of the model shows similarities to the simultaneously released Mercedes-Benz SEC-Class. The W140 coupes produced from 1998 to 1999 and labeled the CL500 and CL600 make up the CL-Class.

About the Mercedes-Benz CL-Class

Active Body Control is comprised of four hydraulic suspension shafts utilizing three pressure regulators, connected to a combined power steering and suspension pump, which injects fluid through the system at a pressure of 2960. Active body control uses several intermediate computers and a master CPU to assist the car in remaining totally flat when turning corners.

The C216 uses the Distronic Plus cruise control, which brings the car to a complete stop and accelerates again to the pre-set speed to keep a pre-set distance away from the car ahead of it. This Mercedes-Benz CL-Class also highlights the new Active Night Vision program that enables drivers to view the conditions in front of the car despite dark surroundings.

The 2012 CL closely matches the 2011 model, showing no significant changes for this year.

Mercedes-Benz CL-Class Evolution

The vehicle underwent significant changes beginning in 2000 when the redesigned and redeveloped vehicle debuted as the W215. The current generation of the CL-Class comes in four models: CL500, with standard 4MATIC in Canada and the USA; CL600; CL63 AMG; and CL65 AMG.

The turn-of-the-century marked Mercedes-Benz’s release of the CL500. A 302-horsepower V-8 engine powers the car and provides the only model in the CL-Class for the 2000 model year.

In 2001, Mercedes upgraded the CL500 engine to the 362-horsepower V-12 and released the 354-horsepower V-8-powered CL55 AMG. Mercedes also uses the 2001 CL to showcase its new technologies, such as Active Body Control and Distronic adaptive cruise control.

Mercedes uses the 2003 model to introduce the turbocharged CL600 and supercharged CL55 AMG, both generating 493 horsepower.

The CL500 added a seven-speed automatic transmission in 2004, along with an AMG Sport Package that joined the CL500 and CL600 as standard inclusions for the last year of this model’s first generation.

The 2006 CL model, the W216, debuted at the 2006 Paris Salon. The W216 comes in four models, each with a different engine and transmission. They include the 5.5-liter, V-8-powered CL 500 with optional 4MATIC all-wheel drive; the high-performance 6.3-liter, V-8-powered CL63 AMG with an optional performance package; the luxury twin-turbo 5.5-liter, V-12-powered CL600; and last but not least the CL65 AMG with a twin-turbo 6.0-liter V-12 engine.

Despite its large size, the CL-Class has limited rear-seat legroom, keeping up the tradition of luxury coupes, though the CL offers more rear passenger space than its rivals.

The 2010 Mercedes CL-Class made its first appearance at the 2010 Goodwood Festival of Speed. This new CL-Class comes with a redesigned exterior and interior, but as usual with Mercedes, the biggest changes can be found under the hood.

The exterior receives a new grille, LED technology bi-xenon headlights, LED fog lamps, revised bumpers and hood, and new exhaust pipes. On the interior, the biggest change is a new wood trim. This CL-Class also offers top technologies, including Active Blind Spot Assist, Attention Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Night View Assist Plus, and Active Body Control.

Mercedes-Benz CL-Class Features

The 2010 model lineup starts with the first-level CL500 powered by a 4.6-liter V-8 engine that delivers 429 horsepower and couples with a new seven-speed automatic transmission, which takes the car from zero to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds.

The 2010 CL600 keeps the twin-turbo 5.5-liter V-12 engine and five-speed automatic and reaches 510 horsepower. Speed isn’t a problem here as the 600 sprints from zero to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. The 2010 CL63 AMG uses a new direct-injection, 5.5-liter V-8 engine, a larger displacement version of the CL550's engine, coupled with a seven-speed MCT dual-clutch transmission system.

A redesigned grille marks the extent of cosmetic changes for the 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class, but it focuses more under the hood. Fitted with two direct-injected, bi-turbo V-8s that get 429 horsepower, this 4.7-liter unit resides in the CL550, and a 5.5-liter version powers the CL63 AMG.

The big boost in horsepower helps the CL500 accelerate to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds. For now, the 2011 CL-Class rules the coop, as the 2012 releases no significant changes.
