1999 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class Review
Compact speed and style.
Reviewed by Automotive on
In 1998, the Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class debuted as a luxury coupe featuring the same engine and similar standard features as the E-Class. In 1999, a convertible option joined the CLK-Class with similar options and features. The 1999 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class offers a sportier look, but similar luxurious options to the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. The CLK-Class proves fast, agile, and fun to drive and ride.
The CLK-Class provides a solid alternative for drivers interested in the SL-Class, which offers a coupe and convertible option based off the S-Class. Drivers uncomfortable with the more powerful engines found in the SL-Class vehicles might feel better behind the wheel of a CLK-Class. In addition, the less powerful engines and slightly less robust standard features list means the CLK-Class costs significantly less than the SL-Class in most situations. While it might not reach the same level as the SL-Class, the CLK-Class still provides wonderful, luxurious vehicles to own.

The 1999 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class introduces a convertible body option. The CLK430 offers a larger engine this model year.
The 1999 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class comes as a sporty two-door coupe or two-door convertible. The convertible body option only applies to the CLK320 model. The two bodies look very similar. The only difference is the presence of the roof on the coupe. All models include standard power heated mirrors. A power moonroof and rain-sensing wipers are available as options.
The Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class cars all come with luxuriously appointed interiors. Power leather seats, cruise control, automatic climate control, leather trim, a trip computer, auto-dimming mirrors, Bose audio, an AM/FM radio, and a cassette player mark standard equipment. A CD player, a CD changer, heated seats, and a cellular phone remain available as optional features.
Performance & Handling
The 1999 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class offers excellent performance and handling. Both engine options provide quick acceleration and a good top speed. The 3.2-liter V-6 pairs with an automatic transmission to produce 215 hp, while the 4.3-liter V-8 puts out 275 hp. All models use rear drive. The CLK-Class maneuvers with agility, allowing the driver to remain in complete control of the vehicle.
All 1999 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class models come equipped with dual front airbags, side curtain airbags, and four-wheel anti-lock brakes as standard equipment. Stability control and traction control remain available as optional features. The CLK-Class also avoids some accidents due to its fast acceleration and excellent maneuverability.
