2001 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class Review

A stylish, upscale vehicle that emphasizes top-of-the-line comfort and safety.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 2001 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class is luxurious and fun to drive, and it’s available with a powerful V-6 or V-8 engine, features a luxurious, upscale interior, and is available as a coupe or convertible. There are three models of coupe available. The base CLK320 features a 3.2-liter V-6 engine with five-speed shiftable automatic transmission, and the CLK430 bumps that up to a mighty 4.3-liter V-8. With the CLK55 AMG consumers get a 5.4-liter V-8 AMG engine that delivers 342 horsepower and 376 lb-ft of torque. The 320 and 430 can be had as convertibles. All models feature leather and wood trim, Bose speaker stereo and power everything.

The Range

What's New

The 2001 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class has a new TeleAid emergency assist system standard on all models.

Exterior

The exterior of the 2001 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class has that unmistakable Mercedes-Benz style with over a dozen exterior paint colors available including Black Opal, Orion Blue Metallic and Magma Red. Consumers will find 16-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires on the CLK320 with speed sensitive wipers and rear defogger, and of course, a retractable top on the convertible model. The 430 upgrades to 17-inch wheels with performance tires, while the CLK55 AMG has the larger wheels and includes a power rear sunshade and power glass sunroof, but does not have a convertible option.

Interior

The 2001 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class is heavy on luxurious interior features including heated, leather, 10-way power bucket front seats with adjustable lumbar support, heated mirrors, power everything, cruise control, wood and leather trim all over, dual climate controls, memorized settings for three drivers and Bose speaker stereo. Consumers will also get the TeleAid communication service and the option for the Cockpit Management and Data (COMAND) system of navigation.

Performance & Handling

The 2001 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class doesn’t represent the highest-performing vehicles in the lineup, but that doesn’t mean consumers won’t get a satisfying ride. The Touch Shift five-speed automatic transmission gives them the convenience of an automatic with up and downshift capability for some manual control. The 3.2-liter V-6 engine of the 320 gives them a nice 215 horsepower and 229 lb-ft of torque, while the AMG engine of the CLK55 is the real monster, a 5.5-liter V-8 that cranks out 342 horses and extremely satisfying speed and acceleration.

Safety

The 2001 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Series puts safety as a big priority as it features four-wheel ABS with emergency brake assist, traction control and stability control, front seat child detection, and the TeleAid emergency assist telecommunications system with vehicle tracking. Other features include electronic brake force distribution, front seatbelt pretensioners, dual front side-mounted airbags, and turn signal mirrors.

EPA Fuel Economy

Mercedes-Benz CLK320: 18/26 mpg city/highway
Mercedes-Benz CLK430: 16/23 mpg city/highway
Mercedes-Benz CL55 AMG: 16/22 mpg city/highway
