2002 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class Review

Luxury coupe with a good reputation.

Reviewed by Automotive on

The 2002 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class is a line of coupes that is loaded with luxury, technology, performance, and standard features. It features three models: CLK320, CLK55 AMG Cabriolet, and CLK430. In traditional Mercedes-Benz format, the numbers represent the engine displacements of their respective powertrains. The CLK500 is powered by a 3.2-liter V-6 engine, CLK55 AMG is powered by a 5.5-liter V-8 engine, and the CLK430 is powered by a 4.3-liter V-8 engine.

The Range

Body Styles: coupe, convertible
Engines: 3.2-liter V-6, 5.5-liter V-8, 4.3-liter V-8
Transmissions: five-speed automatic
Models: Mercedes-Benz CLK320, Mercedes-Benz CLK430, Mercedes-Benz CLK55 AMG Cabriolet

What's New

The 2002 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class introduces the CLK55 AMG Cabriolet and gives the other models new features. The CLK320 got a new optional Sports package that includes aerodynamic body work and 17-inch alloy wheels. The CLK model got standard aerodynamic trim, light gray gauges, blue-tinted windows, and new alloy wheels. The CLK-Class is also available as soft-top convertibles.

The 2002 Mercedes-Benz CLK320 coupe has 16-inch alloy wheels, speed-sensitive windshield wipers, rear defogger, and front fog lights. It also has power heated mirrors with integrated turn signals, power windows and door locks, remote trunk release, and Xenon high-intensity discharge headlights. The passenger side mirror reverse tilts to give consumers a view of the curb for easier parking. The CLK430 has 17-inch alloy wheels. The CLK55 AMG has 17-inch chrome wheels with performance tires, variable intermittent windshield wipers, power rear sunshade, and a power glass sunroof. All convertible models have a power cloth roof and a cargo capacity of 9.4 cubic feet. Cargo capacity for the coupes measures at 11.0 cubic feet.

The 2002 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class coupes have smooth, graceful lines, and the convertibles have a nicely finished soft top that operates smoothly and quietly. The top lowers into the compartment in the trunk, which reduces cargo space to 5.8 cubic feet.

Standard interior features for the 2002 Mercedes Benz CLK320 includes leather upholstery, split-folding rear seat, cruise control, manual rear seat entry, power steering, dual-zone climate controls, trip computer, external temperature display, and leather/wood trim on doors and center console. The 10-way power bucket front seats have manual height adjustments and memory settings for three drivers. The shift knob and telescoping steering wheel are trimmed in leather. The AM/FM CD-controlled stereo system has eight Bose speakers and speed-sensitive volume control. The CLK430 trim adds audio controls on the steering wheel. The sport front seats in the CLK55 AMG have 10-way power, manual height, and lumbar adjustments.

The 2002 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class has a universal remote transmitter for a garage door opener, COMAND and TeleAid systems. The TeleAid system allows a Mercedes-Benz technician to access its mechanical information, and it has a tracking system that will help consumers locate their car if it is stolen. The COMAND system integrates audio, navigation, telephone, and the trip computer functions into one unit and displays the data on a small screen that is mounted in the dashboard. The overall look on the inside is luxurious and inviting. Points are lost, however, due to the overly complicated COMAND system with its multitude of poorly marked, smallish, and poorly placed controls. The front seats are snug, but not spacious enough for long-distance travelling. Even with the many adjustment functions on the power seats, finding the perfect driving position may be a challenge since the steering wheel does not tilt. The rear bench seats are hard and small with sparse legroom.

Performance & Handling

The 2002 Mercedes-Benz CLK320 is powered by a 3.2-liter single overhead cam (SOHC) V-6 engine that makes 215 horsepower and 229 lb-ft of torque. The CLK55 AMG is powered by a 5.5-liter SOHC V-8 engine that makes 342 horsepower and 376 lb-ft of torque. The CLK430 has a 4.3-liter SOHC V-8 with 275 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. It has rear drive and a five-speed automatic transmission with manual shift. Steering is weighty and solid and the handling is quite athletic with very little body lean in cornering. The standard traction control is all but useless when driving on snowy roads due to the low-profile performance tires. The ride is firm, but comfortable; consumers will feel the tires thumping over expansion joints in the road. Although the engine is quiet, road and wind noise is intrusive, and the convertibles are noisier than the coupes.

Standard features for the 2002 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class include four-wheel anti-lock braking system (ABS), traction/stability controls, dual front airbags, remote anti-theft alarm system, emergency braking system, ventilated front disc/solid rear disc brakes, electronic Brake force distribution, and emergency interior trunk release. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the CLK-Class models a ""marginal"" rating for rear crash protection and head restraint.
