1999 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Review

Luxury, performance, and elegance.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 1999 Mercedes-Benz E-Class marks one of the most well-respected vehicles in the luxury segment of the automobile market. The E-Class offers comfort, performance, and style in equal measure. The distinct, graceful curves make the vehicle immediately recognizable, and it carries the same prestige drivers expect from the Mercedes-Benz moniker. The high-power engine and excellent maneuverability make the E-Class fun to drive. The spacious interior and large number of luxury features make the E-Class just as enjoyable to ride in, too.

Not surprisingly, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class remains an expensive vehicle regardless of options. For what it comes with, the E-Class more than justifies the high price tag. Plenty of good vehicles get drivers from one place to the next for far less money, but the E-Class offers so much more for those willing to pay extra for it.

The Range

Engines: 3.2-liter six-cylinder, 4.2-liter eight-cylinder, 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel

What's New

The 1999 Mercedes-Benz E-Class now comes with side curtain airbags as a standard safety feature for all models.

Exterior

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class comes as a European-style sedan or wagon. The front end of both body types looks identical. Only the rear differs on the various E-Class cars. The E320 and E320 4MATIC models come as a wagon. The entire E-Class line appears smooth and stylish in comparison to the C-Class, but still retains similar proportions. The front end of the E-Class looks distinct and elegant, easily distinguishing it as a luxury vehicle.

Standard features for the 1999 Mercedes-Benz E-Class include power heated and auto-dimming mirrors. A power moonroof, an anti-theft system, rain-sensing wipers, and a power rear sunshade are available as options.

Interior

The 1999 Mercedes-Benz E-Class models come with luxuriously appointed interiors. Power leather seats, cruise control, automatic climate control, leather trim, a trip computer, an AM/FM radio, and a cassette player provide standard equipment. A CD player, a CD changer, heated seats, and a cellular phone remain available as optional features.

Performance & Handling

The 1999 Mercedes-Benz E-Class offers excellent performance and handling. All three engine options deliver quick acceleration and a good top speed. The E-Class also feels very maneuverable and agile, allowing the driver to remain in complete control of the vehicle. The E420 with the optional sports package performs at levels similar to a sports car, improving the already impressive abilities of the 1999 Mercedes-Benz E-Class substantially.

Safety

All 1999 Mercedes-Benz E-Class models come equipped with dual front airbags, side curtain airbags, and four-wheel anti-lock brakes as standard safety equipment. Stability control and traction control remain available as optional features. The E-Class also avoids some accidents due to fast acceleration and excellent maneuverability.
