The 2013 Mercedes-Benz SUV lineup receives a modest overhaul in the 2013 model year. Four GL models are offered, including the G350 BlueTec, the GL450, and GL550, as well as the new AMG model, the GL63. The 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class resides in a niche that is somewhere between the company’s smaller M-Class and the ultra-pricey Gelandewagen. The GL-Class offers strong performance and comfort in an attractive design that charges forward with a fuel-efficient diesel engine. Like everything else Mercedes-Benz does, the GL-Class represents engineering excellence and innovative design aimed at the discerning auto buying crowd who expect comfort and performance in equal measure.
New For 2013
For the 2013 model year, the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class stays cosmetically very similar to the preceding model, but adds an assortment of mechanical and interior updates. An AMG model is also introduced. The new features of the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class for 2013 include:
- A new 3.0-liter, turbocharged, diesel six-cylinder engine is introduced in the G350 Bluetec
- The GL450 receives a 4.7-liter, eight-cylinder engine

- Mercedes-Benz’s AMG lineup is given the GL63, boasting a 5.5-liter engine
Visually, not much is changed over the prior year for the 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class. The shape and dimensions are fundamentally the same, and the overall aesthetic is only subtly advanced. The GL-Class is slightly more rounded in the corners and now complemented by L-shaped LED parking lamps and turn signal assemblies. Taillights are wider and now include LEDs. Nineteen-inch alloy wheels are standard, as are all season tires. A power lift gate door, intermittent rear wiper, and a roof rack are also included. A remote sunroof is also a standard amenity. The GL350 BlueTec offers up to 240 horsepower, while the engine of the GL450 offers up 335 horsepower in non-turbo, and 363 horsepower when turbocharged. The GL550 ramps up to an impressive 429 horsepower. The new 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG tops the power output list of the lineup, coming in at 550 horsepower. In all cases, the engine is paired to a seven-speed shiftable automatic transmission. ABS and traction control make the ride very stable for an SUV of this type.
In-cabin features are plentiful and make the GL-Class pleasant to drive. Comfortable and elegant seating, quality sound, and resulting low road noise make the driving experience outstanding.
