1999 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class Review

A two-seater to drive up the coast.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 1999 Mercedes-Benz S-Class, despite its high performance, generally places more emphasis on luxury than raw performance. The SL-Class improves performance slightly, but mostly takes the luxury of the S-Class and transfers it to a convertible. The 1999 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class provides a two-seater convertible built with a greater focus on performance than luxury. Even though performance gets attention, the SLK-Class still manages to retain most of the luxury equipment found standard on the S-Class. Despite the small size of the SLK-Class and its small engine, the SLK230 offers a lot of power, speed, and maneuverability hidden in its compact frame.

One thing that sets the SLK-Class apart from other two-seat convertibles is its retractable hardtop. While many other two-seaters have optional hardtops, these often prove difficult to remove or install. The SLK-Class conveniently changes into a comfortable all-weather vehicle at a moment’s notice. In addition, air-conditioning and automatic climate control come standard, so putting the top up never makes for an uncomfortable experience, as with many convertibles that lack these features.

The Range

Body Styles: convertible
Engines: 2.3-liter four-cylinder
Transmissions: five-speed automatic, five-speed manual
Models: Mercedes-Benz SLK230 Kompressor, Mercedes-Benz SLK230 Sport

What's New

The 1999 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class adds a manual transmission option, integrated cellular phone controls, and an improved stereo system.

Exterior

The SLK-Class serves as a sleek, European-styled, two-seat convertible with a built-in, retractable hardtop. The 1999 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class measures extremely short, at only 157.3 inches in length. Alloy wheels and power heated and auto-dimming mirrors all come standard. Metallic paint remains an optional feature.

Interior

The 1999 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class offers similar luxury to the S-Class. Power leather seats, power windows, power locks, cruise control, air-conditioning, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather trim, Bose audio, a light bar, a garage door opener, an AM/FM radio, and a cassette player comprise the standard equipment. A CD player, a CD changer, heated seats, and a cellular phone remain available as options.

Performance & Handling

The SLK-Class provides roadster-level performance, handling, and acceleration. The 2.3-liter, four-cylinder engine proves much more powerful than it sounds, providing 185 horsepower of output. Combined with the small size of the 1999 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class, it makes for a very quick and perky vehicle.

Safety

All 1999 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class models come equipped with dual front airbags, side curtain airbags, four-wheel anti-lock brakes, stability control, and traction control as standard safety equipment. The SLK-Class also avoids some accidents due to its fast acceleration and excellent maneuverability.
