1997 Mercury Mystique Review

High performance for a midlevel price.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 1997 Mercury Mystique is a co-developed vehicle between Ford and Mercury. It uses the same overall design as the Ford Contour. The Mystique offers the performance and handling of more expensive sedans, while keeping prices low due to the streamlined manufacturing process behind it. In the Mystique’s price range, very few vehicles offer anywhere near the same level of performance.

Standard features in the base model of the Mercury Mystique are minimal, even with the optional features. For some drivers, the Mystique’s lower price might be worth missing out on some basic amenities. However, a fully loaded Mercury Mystique GS still offers an excellent value and has all the standard features most drivers expect from a sedan. The base offering might not be as good as some vehicles, but the low base price and reasonable cost of options makes it very easy to add to the Mystique without inflating the price too much in the process.

The Range

Body Styles: sedan
Engines: 2.0-liter four-cylinder, 2.5-liter six-cylinder
Transmissions: four-speed automatic, five-speed manual
Models: Mercury Mystique, Mercury Mystique GS, Mercury Mystique LS

What's New

A trunk light and a tilt steering wheel come standard on this model year’s Mystique. The 1997 Mercury Mystique GS now includes the option of the Spree package.

Exterior

The Mercury Mystique classifies as an attractive sedan. Exterior features remain minimal on the base model, but the 1997 Mercury Mystique GS offers alloy wheels, keyless entry, a power moonroof, and a rear spoiler as options. Other optional features include a rear window defroster.

Interior

The 1997 Mercury Mystique includes an attractive interior. The rear seat feels cramped for an adult, but otherwise it makes for a comfortable vehicle. Standard features include a tilt steering wheel and an AM/FM radio. A cassette player provides an optional feature. The Mercury Mystique GS also offers cruise control, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, air-conditioning, power seats, a cassette player, and a CD player.

Performance & Handling

The Mercury Mystique offers excellent performance. The two-liter, four-cylinder engine remains fairly mediocre, but works well enough for day to day driving. The 2.5-liter, six-cylinder engine gives the Mystique excellent acceleration. The 1997 Mercury Mystique, regardless of the engine, makes for an agile vehicle that turns well. The optional Spree package for the Mercury Mystique GS makes it a competitive sports sedan.

Safety

The 1997 Mercury Mystique comes equipped with driver and passenger front airbags. In NHTSA crash tests, the Mystique received five out of five stars for driver overall safey and four out of five stars on passenger safety. The IIHS gave the Mystique a rating of ?poor,? its lowest rating, for frontal offset crash tests.
