1995 Mercury Sable Review

A Mercury that comes with decent performance yet again.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 1995 Mercury Sable is an upscale, midsize vehicle built by Ford and sold through the Mercury brand. It's very similar in construction to the Ford Taurus but with a variety of cosmetic differences. It offered a fresh, futuristic design when it was first introduced in 1986, and while it may now just stand as another member of the pack, its smart design still holds some appeal. It's offered as either a sedan or a wagon with two available trim levels: the entry-level GS, and the upgraded LS.

The Range

Body Styles: wagon, sedan
Engines: 3.0-liter V-6
Transmissions: four-speed automatic
Models: Mercury Sable GS, Mercury Sable LS

What's New

The 1995 Mercury Sable is in its ninth year of production for the second-generation model. It comes with new cylinder heads and crankshafts, meant to reduce vibration and engine noise. Solar control window glass is also offered on both the sedan and wagon.

Exterior

The 1995 Mercury Sable's trademark exterior feature is its distinctive light bar, which is a low-wattage light that runs between the front headlights. While this eventually became a common feature on Mercury vehicles, it's still recognized as the first. Other standard exterior offerings for all models include 15-inch wheels, a rear window defroster, a roof rack, and intermittent windshield wipers. Available options also include alloy wheels and a lighted entry system.

Interior

The 1995 Mercury Sable includes standard interior features, such as cloth seating, a clock, a tachometer, a front split bench seat, a tilt steering wheel, and an AM/FM audio system. Optional equipment is also available and includes cruise control, a cassette player, and power front seats. A third row seat is also offered for the wagon.

Performance & Handling

The 1995 Mercury Sable comes with only one engine and one transmission option: a 3.0-liter V-6 paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. The engine offers decent acceleration and good passing power, but the transmission tends to be a little rough around the edges.

Safety

The 1995 Mercury Sable GS offers standard driver and passenger front airbags. Meanwhile, the LS models also include four-wheel anti-lock brakes as standard. Optional features are available and include keyless entry and a lighted entry system.

EPA Fuel Economy

Mercury Sable GS Wagon: 18/27 mpg city/highway
Mercury Sable GS Sedan: 18/27 mpg city/highway
Mercury Sable LS Wagon: 16/24 mpg city/highway
Mercury Sable LS Sedan: 17/26 mpg city/highway
