2000 Mercury Sable Review

Secret luxury

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 2000 Mercury Sable is a mechanical and corporate twin of the Ford Taurus. Both are built with the same conservative styling, and in the same plant. Both vehicles are available in a wagon and sedan model, providing a lot of versatility to drivers smart enough to pick this vehicle out of a lineup.

The new Sable receives quite a few changes that set it apart from its twin. The new exterior molding gives the Mercury Sable a larger and more aggressive look. In fact, we can go so far as to say the Mercury Sable is downright attractive. If you’re looking for a family sedan or wagon, look no further.

The Range

  • Body Styles: wagon, sedan
  • Engines: 3.0-liter V-6
  • Transmissions: four-speed automatic
  • Models: Mercury Sable GS sedan, Mercury Sable LS sedan, Mercury Sable LS
  • Premium sedan, Mercury Sable GS wagon, Mercury Sable LS Premium

What's New

The 2000 Mercury Sable has received several exterior changes that drastically improve the appearance of the vehicle. Several new safety features have also improved the safety ratings of the vehicle. Engine changes mean more horsepower and a low emission rating that makes the car suitable for driving in California.

Exterior

The 2000 Mercury Sable has received several molding changes to the exterior that changes the shape of the vehicle, and how much space is available inside. The Mercury Sable is offered as a sedan or a wagon. Both have a curved roof that provides a lot of headroom for the passengers. The changes to the exterior are welcome, given that the old styling was certainly ugly. The new Mercury Sable looks larger and more substantial.

Standard features include 16-inch alloy wheels, intermittent windshield wipers, and a roof rack.

Interior

The six-passenger 2000 Mercury Sable receives a bit of an overhaul for 2000. All the exterior moldings, except for those on the door, are changed. The plastic and other materials are scaled down a bit, giving the Sable a larger feel, even though the wheelbases are the same. Trunk space has hardly changed, measuring in at 14 cubic feet. All of the controls have larger buttons, making everything easier to use while on the go. Also, the buttons are now square instead of the standard circular shape, giving them a solid feel.

One nice feature inside the Mercury Sable is the power-adjustable accelerator and brake pedals. When a control button is pressed, the pedals will adjust according to the driver’s comfort. The pedals will adjust horizontally up to three inches. The center console also has a flip and fold feature that gives the driver better access to the controls when on the go.

Standard features in the base model include a center console, keyless entry system, lighted entry system, power brakes, a third seat on the wagon models, a tachometer, cloth seating, front split bench seat, cruise control, power steering, tilt steering wheel, air-conditioning, power windows, power door locks, power exterior mirrors, and an AM/FM cassette stereo system. Optional features include power heated mirrors, bucket seating, a CD changer, daytime running lamps, and power-adjustable pedals.

Performance & Handling

The 2000 Mercury Sable comes equipped with one of two engines. Both engines are a 3.0-liter V-6; however, one has an output of 155 horsepower, while the second produces 200 horsepower. The V-6 is more powerful than the previous year. Both engines are paired with a four-speed automatic transmission.

There are several other improvements to the engine. The new V-6 is a lot quieter than the 1999 model. Also, the engine changes smoothly between gears, a feature that was somewhat lacking in the previous engine. The new engines meet low-emission vehicle standards for California. Suspension and steering is also improved, providing the driver a better ride altogether.

Safety

The 2000 Mercury Sable comes equipped with driver and passenger front airbags. The NHTSA have the Mercury Sable five out of five stars for front passenger and driver safety. However, the Mercury Sable only received three out of five stars for side-impacts to the front and rear of the vehicle. The IIHS gave the Mercury Sable and overall score of ""good,"" their best possible rating.
