2003 Mercury Sable Review

Affordable luxury in an generic looking model.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

Since the car’s beginnings, the 2003 Mercury Sable has been compared to its sibling, the Ford Taurus. It offers a competent sedan or wagon to the public. It is more than capable of taking care of a family’s needs from commuting to work to making it to the soccer game on time. The interior is comfortable and designed to meet the needs of several passengers. This is the type of car that makes long road trips easy. Overall, it is perfect for anyone looking for an affordable, easy to drive, and dependable sedan or wagon.

The Range

Body Styles: sedan, wagon
Engines: 3.0-liter V-6
Transmissions: four-speed automatic
Models: Mercury Sable GS, Mercury Sable GS Plus, Mercury Sable LS Premium

What's New

The 2003 Mercury Sable is offered in two new colors for the season. It also offers a new cup holder design. Power windows, locks, and floor mats, along with tilt adjustable steering wheel, are standard for all models. The Platinum Edition was offered for this model year as well. It features a fender badge and perforated leather. This package also offers aluminum wheels with a center cap ornament and interior trim pieces. The LS Premium model featured leather trim at no additional charge in 2003 as well.

Exterior

The 2003 Mercury Sable has an uninspiring design. It is certainly true that the Sable isn’t exactly the most exciting looking car available. Due to its generic appearance, it has become quite popular with rental car agencies. It has a basic front end and sloping hood. The overall body style is streamlined. The wagon body style is for the most part just like the sedan. It has the same front end and sides. However, the back end wagon does manage to give it something of a different look. The rear windows add some visual interest. The standard roof rack for these models helps as well. Some of the color choices include Arizona Beige Clearcoat Metallic, Medium True Blue Metallic Clearcoat, and Vibrant White Clearcoat just to name a few.

Interior

The 2003 Mercury Sable are designed to be incredibly comfortable. The front seats are bench style and feature a 40-20-40 split. Both the front and back seats are upholstered with cloth. The back seats have their own ventilation ducts and they are split folding as well. Power door locks, windows, and mirrors are standard equipment as well. It is equipped with air conditioning, cruise control, front door pockets for storage, and cup holders for convenience. The base models are offered with a six-speaker AM/FM stereo system.

Performance & Handling

The simplest way to describe the performance and handling of this model is ""dependable and reliable."" There really aren’t any surprises. In either its sedan or wagon form, it has a competent powertrain that ensures it is durable and able to provide basic transportation at an affordable price. The 2003 Mercury Sable sports a 3.0-liter, V6 engine.

Safety

The 2003 Mercury Sable is well known for its many safety features. It is equipped with a front center lap belt as well as a rear center three point belt. There are ventilated disc brakes in the front and rear drum brakes for the back. Child seat anchors and rear door child safety locks are part of the package, too. The front seats have two headrests, and they are designed for height adjustment. An engine immobilizer is in place in the event of an accident. This device stops the engine after a collision to reduce the possibility of further risk.
