2022 Mini Convertible MODEL OVERVIEW

  • Zippy even in base form
  • Unlike anything else on the road
  • Stiff chassis means fewer shakes and rattles

  • Rearward visibility is compromised, even with top down
  • Interior continues to prioritize form over function
  • Front-end revamp looks kludgy

If you're in the market for a stick-shift, four-seat convertible for under $30,000—well, you're looking at it. Bug-eyed and oozing cuteness, the Mini Convertible soldiers on into 2022 with a raft of small changes to keep it fresh.

What's New

  • Three new colors: Zesty Yellow, Rooftop Grey metallic, and Island Blue Metallic
  • Front bumper strip is now color-keyed
  • Conversely, Piano Black trim now adorns practically all the exterior contrasting trim
  • Front grille is larger
  • Lane departure warning is now standard
  • Black replaces chrome on inner headlight housings
  • Foglights are vanquished in favor of air inlets
  • Inside there are new designs for the dashboard, steering wheel, and air vents
  • Digital instrument cluster and 8.8-inch infotainment screen are now standard

What We Think

Though the Mini Convertible's underpinnings may be relatively unchanged since 2016, that's not necessarily a bad thing. Considering that the Mini seems to grow with every new generation, we're fine with its size staying put for the foreseeable.

Likewise, our opinion of the Mini Convertible remains the same. In our 2016 First Drive of the Mini Convertible Cooper S, we said that "the steering is typical Mini, meaning twitchy off-center with a surprising measure of torque steer." Hyper reflexes aside, "the Cooper S surprises with commendable body control, loads of grip, and traction control that genuinely helps put the power down without slowing the car."

As for the interior, it's also typical Mini, meaning that style, not logic, seems to define the placement of many a button and switch. The parking brake smacks into the armrest, for example, and the iDrive-like controller is awkwardly placed in the center console.

Like any convertible, these faults can be overlooked the moment the top is put down. But the Mini's short size means the top doesn't fully retract into the body, hampering rearward visibility. But if that's the price to pay for style, that price is still less than $30,000. If a cheeky convertible is on your list, we'd say the trade-offs might be worth it.

Performance and Fuel Economy

The 2022 Mini Convertible is available with three engine options, ranging from mild to spicy hot and all driving the front wheels.

Cooper models feature a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder generating 136 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque. Six-speed manual versions return 27/37 mpg city/highway and 29/38 with the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. With either transmission, the Cooper will scoot from 0 to 60 mph in 8.2 seconds.

Cooper S models feature a 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4, which produces 192 hp and 206 lb-ft of torque, again with your choice of transmission. Fuel economy is rated at 23/33 mpg with either transmission, and the 0-60 time drops to 6.7 seconds.

The Mini John Cooper Works features a hotter version of the 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 that makes 231 hp and 235 lb-ft of torque. Exclusively mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, 0-60 arrives in 6.3 seconds.

Mini's Active Driving Assistant is standard, which bundles together forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, and front automatic emergency braking. Adaptive cruise control is only available on the Signature and Iconic trims as part of the Driver Assistance package, which also includes automatic parking assist. Lane departure warning is now standard.

Cargo Space and Interior Room

The Mini Convertible seats four, with a respectable 41.4 inches of legroom up front but just 30.9 inches for those crammed in the back. Cargo capacity measures a tiny 5.7 cubic feet behind the rear seat, which expands to a slightly better 7.6 cubic feet with the seats folded down.

Mini's infotainment system now features a standard 8.8-inch touchscreen. Apple CarPlay connectivity is available via the Connected Navigation package. Uplevel trims are also offered with a 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.
