2022 Mini Hardtop MODEL OVERVIEW

Pros

  • Still a standout in its class
  • Multitone roof is colorful and unique
  • Endless customization options

Cons

  • Ergonomics are cute rather than convenient
  • Restyled front end looks awkward in certain colors
  • Not so "mini" anymore

Although the lineup has expanded to include elongated hatchbacks and a quasi-SUV, the original Hardtop is still the most iconic Mini model. For 2022, the Mini Hardtop is once again available as a two- or four-door hatchback and sports a mild interior and exterior rejuvenation to keep its looks fresh.

What's New

  • Multitone roof option features a color gradient through three colors
  • Island Blue and Rooftop Gray join exterior palette, joined later by Zesty Yellow
  • Ambient interior lighting is now on the options list
  • Front bumper strip is now color-keyed
  • LED headlights now standard
  • Union Jack LED taillights now standard
  • Inside there are new dashboard, steering wheel, and air vent designs
  • Heated steering wheel now an option
  • Sport seats available in light checkered color
  • Digital instrument cluster and 8.8-inch infotainment screen are now standard
  • Electric parking brake now available
  • Adaptive cruise control gains stop and go function
  • Front grille is larger
  • Lane departure warning is now standard

What We Think

Yes, it's considerably larger than the original, but this Mini is still pretty small, which makes it perfect for tooling about town. Power is more than adequate from the turbo three- and four-cylinder engines, and the four-door model is capacious enough to transport four actual-size human beings.

Ride quality, however, is on the choppy side, even in the longer wheelbase of the four-door. With its shorter wheelbase, the coupe is relatively punishing on rough surfaces, exacerbated by the largish wheels and narrow sidewalls. The Mini driving experience is often compared to a go-kart—which, depending on your point of view, is either a blessing or a curse. For a sporty hatch like this one, we'd suggest going for the four-cylinder model if you can.

Performance and Fuel Economy

The 2022 Mini Hardtop is available with three engine options driving the front wheels.

Cooper models feature a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder making 136 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque. In both two- and four-door models, six-speed manual versions return 27/37 mpg city/highway and 29/38 mpg with the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. With either transmission, the Cooper will accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 7.6 seconds in two-door form; four-door models take 7.9 seconds.

Cooper S models receive a 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4, which produces 192 hp and 206 lb-ft of torque, again with your choice of transmission. Fuel economy for both is the same at 23/33 mpg, and 0-60 times drop, with the two-door needing only 6.4 seconds and the four-door right behind at 6.5.

The Mini Hardtop in John Cooper Works form is available as a two-door only and features a more powerful 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4, pumping out 231 hp and 235 lb-ft of torque. With a six-speed manual transmission or seven-speed DCT, 0-60 mph arrives in 5.9 seconds, and fuel economy is rated at 22/31 mpg.

Safety

NHTSA: 4 stars (out of a possible five stars; only the two-door has been tested)

IIHS: Good in four crash tests (the highest possible rating; only the two-door has been tested)

Mini's Active Driving Assistant is standard on the 2022 Hardtop. That bundles together forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, and front automatic emergency braking. Adaptive cruise control is only available on the Signature and Iconic trims as part of the Driver Assistance package, which also includes automatic parking assist. Lane departure warning is now standard.

Cargo Space and Interior Room

As expected of the name, interior space is on the mini-er side. Front legroom in the two-door is a decent 41.4 inches, though the rear seats feature a decidedly cramped 30.8 inches. Four-doors are only slightly better, at 32.3 inches in the rear. Similarly, cargo capacity is a meager 8.7 cubic feet with the rear seats up or 34.0 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. The four-door Hardtop offers a little more cargo space, with 13.1 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 40.7 cubic feet with rear seats folded.

Technology

Mini's infotainment system now features a standard 8.8-inch touchscreen. Apple CarPlay connectivity is available via the Connected Navigation package. Uplevel trims are also offered with a 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.
