2005 Mitsubishi Galant Review

Spacious, fun to drive, and stylish, but not the most practical or refined.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 2005 Mitsubishi Galant provides a stylish-looking, front-drive sedan. The Galant got a major redesign in 2004, and the new generation offers many improvements over previous versions of the car. It also comes in five trim levels: DE, ES, SE, LS V-6, and GST V-6.

While the Galant may not ever be the top vehicle in its class, it remains just affordable enough and just reliable enough to earn consideration.

The Range

Body Styles: sedan
Engines: 2.4-liter four-cylinder, 3.8-liter V-6
Transmissions: four-speed automatic
Models: Mitsubishi Galant DE, Mitsubishi Galant ES, Mitsubishi Galant SE, Mitsubishi Galant LS V-6, Mitsubishi Galant GTS V-6

What's New

New additions to the 2005 Mitsubishi Galant include the introduction of seat-mounted side airbags with head protection on all models. The LS adds a power driver’s seat with lumbar adjustment. Heating ducts have been added to the rear floor and the Metal Mesh and Birdseye wood on the GST get replaced by Blackwood.

Exterior

Standard exterior features for the 2005 Mitsubishi Galant, depending on the trim level, consist of front and rear mud flaps, a rear lip spoiler, body-colored bumpers, body-colored body-side moldings, black grille moldings surrounded by chrome, clearcoat monotone paint, and dual power remote exterior mirrors.

The base DE features steel wheels, power mirrors, power door locks, while the SE boasts alloy wheels and a rear spoiler. The LS V-6 features a chrome grille, steel wheels, and power mirrors. The GTS V-6 adds a rear spoiler, power heated mirrors, a rear defogger, variable intermittent windshield wipers, and a power glass sunroof.

Interior

The interior of the 2005 Galant provides seating for five and features front bucket seats. Front-seat heating remains available for most trim levels. The driver’s seat gets eight-way power or six-way power depending on the trim level, while passenger seats power-adjust four ways. The 2005 Mitsubishi Galant features rear bench seating and either premium cloth or leather seat trim, again depending on the trim level.

The DE features a front console with storage, front door pockets, remote trunk release, air-conditioning, a driver vanity mirror, and a four-speaker stereo system with an AM/FM radio and a dash-mounted CD player.

Moving up a trim level to the ES gets you many of the same features along with cruise control, a tilt-adjustable steering wheel with buttons for cruise control, and a six-speaker sound system. The SE offers remote power door locks, one-touch power windows, cruise control, air-conditioning, a leather steering wheel, and a six-speaker sound system with a CD player and MP3 playback.

The LS V-6 includes some of these same features, such as cruise control, remote power door locks, air-conditioning, and a tilt-adjustable steering wheel with buttons for the cruise control. The GST also includes cruise control, leather interior, a tilt-adjustable steering wheel with audio and cruise controls mounted on it, climate control, leather trim on the shift knob and steering wheel, and an eight-speaker Infinity premium brand stereo system with a dash-mounted six-disc CD changer and 270 watts of output.

Performance & Handling

The 2005 Mitsubishi Galant delivers a good quality ride overall and has excellent handling. The four-cylinder engine provides adequate power but opting for the V-6, which produces 230 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque, turns the Galant into a more formidable performer.

The LS V-6 draws power from the 3.8-liter V-6. It also uses front drive and comes with a four-speed shiftable automatic transmission. The sporty GST V-6 draws power from the same 3.8-liter V-6 as the LS V-6.

Safety

Standard safety features for the 2005 Mitsubishi Galant include side-mounted airbags, child seat anchors, ventilated front disc and solid rear disc brakes, rear-door child safety locks, daytime running lights, an engine immobilizer, and rear integrated headrests. In crash tests conducted by the NHTSA, the 2005 Galant receives perfect ratings for passenger and driver impacts as well as front and rear side-impacts. For rollover tests it receives four stars out of five. In IIHS ratings the 2005 Galant earns a top rating of ""good"" for frontal-offset and side-impact tests and a lowest rating of ""poor"" for rear crash protection.

EPA Fuel Economy

Mitsubishi Galant 2.4-liter four-cylinder: 20/27 mpg city/highway
Mitsubishi Galant 3.8-liter V-6: 17/25 mpg city/highway
