Mitsubishi Mirage

The Industrial Revolution carried a tremendous amount of change in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Regarding the automotive industry, talented people and businessmen changed the face of transportation all over the world. While automakers in the U.S. and Europe certainly gained a great deal of attention, the Asian markets had their fair share of automotive forerunners as well. In Japan, the Mitsubishi company was established in 1870 as a heavy industrial manufacturer of all kinds of goods.

Mitsubishi Mirage Origins

It wasn’t long before Mitsubishi decided to try its hand at making cars and other vehicles. In 1917, the company’s automotive division offered its first car, the Model A. The car was met with great reviews, and Mitsubishi quickly got busy creating full lines of cars, vans, and buses for the Asian market.

In 2003, Mitsubishi executives separated the automotive division from the rest of the company. Under this new banner, the Mitsubishi Motors company offers the Mirage and several other models in Japan and various other world markets.

About the Mitsubishi Mirage

Mitsubishi is known for offering affordable and sometimes rather basic cars. The compact Mirage is known for providing owners with reliable transportation, decent fuel economy, and a relatively comfortable cabin. Mitsubishi offered the Mirage from 1997 to 2002.

During this time, the Mirage was popular with Mitsubishi fans for engine power and performance that were comparable to other, more popular cars of the same class. However, many automotive experts feel the car’s unassuming manner and appearance kept it in the dark.

Consumers who gave the Mitsubishi Mirage a chance were favorably impressed by the little car’s interior. While not necessarily stunning or luxurious, the Mirage cabin is more than comfortable. It's known for its comfortable seating, and Mitsubishi made every attempt to provide sufficient insulation. An obvious and well-known feature is its affordability.

Mitsubishi Mirage Features

The 2001 model year marked the last edition of the Mirage. This car offers everything a consumer could expect, such as reliability and affordability. The Mirage is offered in coupe or sedan body styles and is available in two trim levels: the DE and the more upscale LS.

The Mirage has always been known for its rather sparse design, and the 2002 DE Mirage is no exception. It is equipped with a 1.5-liter engine with the capability of 92 hp or the larger, 1.8-liter engine offering 113 hp. Either engine could be paired with the four-speed automatic transmission or the five-speed manual system.

The Mitsubishi Mirage LS version was a little more upscale in terms of options. In addition to the engine choices, buyers had the option to add power locks and windows, cruise control, and or sunroof. Mitsubishi also offered 14-inch wheels in this trim level as well. In either edition, the Mirage listed as an affordable option in the compact car class.

Mitsubishi Mirage Evolution

The third and fourth generations were similar in terms of powertrain and performance. Industry leaders warned about Mirage models equipped with the 1.5-liter engine and the automatic transmission. Apparently, this combination resulted in too much noise from the road and engine.

Early in its fourth generation, the car comes available in several trim levels, including the S, ES, and LS. From the 1994 model year until the end of the Mirage in 2002, Mitsubishi gradually made changes to the car. The 1994 model year marked an upgrade to 13-inch wheels, a larger engine in LS sedan model, and air bag installation on the driver’s side. In 1995, dual airbags were added to the Mirage and the company restricted sedan sales to fleet dealers only. The Mirage isn’t typically considered a top used-car choice, but the interested buyer may be able to find a good, quality option.
