The 1997 Mitsubishi Montero Sport is a sport utility vehicle (SUV) that is available in three models. Two different engine options are available and both offer a manual or automatic transmission. The Mitsubishi Montero Sport SUV debuts as a brand new model this year.

The 1997 Mitsubishi Montero Sport is a brand new model that's introduced this year. Base plans for the Montero Sport are adopted from the full-size Montero SUV. The Sport gives a shorter, lighter, and sportier appearance.
The 1997 Mitsubishi Montero Sport has four doors and a standard skid plate that protects the underbody. A trailer hitch is available as an option on all models. Power external rearview mirrors are standard on the XLS, available on the LS, and not available on the ES. A rear window defroster is equipped on all models, and the rear wiper is standard on the LS and XLS, but an option on the ES.
The 1997 Mitsubishi Montero Sport LS and XLS include front and rear cup holders as standard, but only the front cup holders are available in the base model. Air-conditioning is standard on the XLS but costs extra in the ES and LS. The Montero Sport ES model is equipped with an audio system that comes with four speakers, and the LS audio system has six speakers with an extra two available at an extra cost. The XLS has eight speakers as a standard.
Furthermore, the Montero Sport comes with front bucket seats and rear bench seats. All three models also have a seating capacity of five and front and rear center armrests. Leather upholstery and a leather steering wheel are standard in the XLS, an extra in the LS, and not available in the base model.
Performance & Handling
The 1997 Mitsubishi Montero Sport comes equipped with a standard 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine, capable of 132 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque. The LS and XLS get a three-liter V-6; both can spit out 173 horsepower and 188 lb-ft of torque. LS engines can be mated with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic, whereas the ES is only available in a manual transmission and the XLS is only available in an automatic.
The 1997 Mitsubishi Montero Sport SUV has power anti-lock brakes available at an extra cost for the LS and XLS. Dual front airbags are installed on all models and a security system is available as an option on the LS and XLS models only.
