A convertible car is a body style that has a retractable roof. Early convertibles often used canvas or vinyl roofs that were flexible enough to collapse the into its holding compartment. In recent years convertible hard tops have become more popular as it gives the feeling of a coupe and the flexibility of freedom of the early convertible cars. Some people confuse a roadster with a folding “soft top” as being convertible but the difference is that a true convertible has side windows that can “convert” the car into a full coupe. Most convertible vehicles come with two doors though there are exceptions like the Lincoln Continental of the 1960s. With additional safety standards of the mid 1970s the convertible was all but lost with T-tops or “targa tops” being a safer alternative with a more rigid design. It wasn’t until the mid 1980s and even early 1990s when convertible car emerged as the most desired sports car body style with models like the Mazda MX-5 leading the resurgence.
