A hatchback or sometimes called “liftback” emerged as an off-shoot of the traditional sedan design that replaced a separate engine compartment with a liftgate back, where the entire back of the car lifts up. Hatchbacks are also referred to as 3-door or 5-door cars with the back liftgate or “hatch” being considered another entry point. In the 1990s hatchbacks became increasingly rare in North America but have since emerged in the mid 2000s with the Ford Focus, BMW-built Mini Cooper, Toyota Yaris, Nissan Versa, and Honda Fit.
