Mitsubishi Outlander Information
The first Mitsubishi Outlander was released under the Mitsubishi Airtrek name in 2001. The name was supposed to invoke a free, lighthearted journey into adventure and exploration, and was changed to bring in more feelings of freedom, adventure, and exotic excitement. The crossover SUV was based on the Mitsubishi ASX (Active Sports Crossover) SUV, which was on exhibit at the 2001 North American International Auto Show. The Airtrek was released in Japan that same year. At first the Airtrek and the Outlander were manufactured parallel to one another, but the Outlander got a modified front grille and different headlights. In 2005, the second generation was created, and the Outlander name was adopted for the merged crossover SUV in most markets, including Japan. The Mitsubishi Outlander was created to fill the market demand for cars with the performance capabilities of an SUV and a size and economy level more similar to a car.
